What is a "higher power", and why do you believe in it? |
I don't believe in God because there is no reason for God to create the kind of evil that exists in this world. |
| If you were the mom of one of the elementary school children that were shot in their own school, would you believe in God? I wouldn't, and I don't now. |
Maybe God didn't create the evil, but rather helps us deal with it. |
See the Epicurus quote from a page back for your answer. If you are going to speculate in "maybes", then what isn't a possible scenario? Should they all be discussed with equal consideration? |
Man does the evil we see in the world. That’s not God. |

I use to be an atheist however now I believe in Buddhism. Higher consciousness, inner consciousness, awareness or some call it the God within us all. I do not believe in organized religion either. I feel we are all connected on a deep level, connected to the environment, connected to the universe. Even the Bible seems to point to a deeper meaning than what most church's teach.
I feel the teachings within Buddhism are true to life and accept the sufferings of life and the impermanence of life and everything throughout our life. I have found great peace by accepting and listening to these teachings. |
No it's not God, the evil comes from the man's mind. Stuck in mind alone sends people crazy. |
I'm not that pp, but you have to admit there are higher powers. Try violating gravity or centrifugal force sometime. No question there are forces that (probably) created the universe (although I'll allow there are different theories on this), and forces that control or supervise nature. Or maybe nature and God are one in the same. I believe Spinoza and Einstein believed this. |
This is called “defining god into existence” (for the things we know). Also, “the god of the gaps” (for the parts we don’t know). This isn’t really relevant to most people’s discussion of religion, and the problem is some people use it to try and sneak in woo. This is why I asked for a definition of a “higher power” before I responded. Since none of those things are supernatural, and there is evidence for all of them, obviously there can be no reasonable objection except maybe to call that definition extremely over-wrought. But again, that is NOT what most people mean when they say “god” or even “higher power”. Usually, they mean something supernatural. And there is insufficient evidence of the existence of the supernatural. I can define god into existence by claiming “god it’s my coffee mug” and there it is. |
True enough. You'll always win this argument. Mankind invented God very early on, and this idea has had great staying power all through our history and up to the present. For you and I maybe this supernatural power doesn't exist, but I see how some beiieve as the forces of the universe are still awesome and mysterious. And as far as "defining God," well of course there are dozens if not hundreds of definitions. I think people around here should have to define what they mean when they use that term. |
What is stuck in mind alone? |
| I don't believe in god. My parents didn't believe in god. Their parents didn't believe in god. I never really think about all that much. And I don't care if other people believe. No judgement (unless they want to force their beliefs on others). |
I don’t believe in god. My parents are kinda religious but they warned me about it as a teen. One thing that cemented it to me is that if I didn’t believe in all of the other gods because they aren’t real, then what foundation of reality do I have to believe in any other god? It’s just one more god to not believe in! Also- reading the Bible has made me realize that all of it is bs. Heck- when I die, I’m not married in heaven according to the Bible and that sucks. Also- Abraham married his sister and sold her to random men because she was barren (because she’s his sister!) and then she got pregnant by some king. Which means- wait for it: Isaac was never Abrahams biological kid. Only Ishmael was. Also- it’s ok to have sex with your dad. Also ok to baby murder. Also not ok to eat bacon. Also ok to rape someone’s sister as king as you promise to get circumcised and then it’s ok for the brothers to murder you. Yeah. The Bible is a horrific. And if you tell me some parts are good- I’m going to tell you cherry picking is how we have the Taliban too. So basically- the Bible made me atheist. |
“ I’m an atheist, too. But Sarah was not Abraham’s sister. Ishmael was the biological son of Abraham and Hagar. Isaac was the biological son of Abraham and Sarah. Midian was the biological son of Abraham and Keturah. |
