| My DC just got off the waiting list and it was her first choice, but OOS. She commiteed to another school and she's been going through the process of picking out her meal plan, signing up for the roommate matching insta, registered for orientation, we even reserved a hotel for parents weekend so has started to develop an affinity for it. She's torn, she loves VT and they have a better program for what she wants to study, but there are definitly pros to the school she choose as well (not a safety, same par as VT). Finances are not an issue. Why should she NOT go to VT? We're defintily looking at things carefully, just curious about others' thoughts. |

It sounds like your DD is already pretty far down the road to becoming part of the class of what is probably an excellent school. Maybe choose the school that chose her, especially if it is in state.
|
| this is a horrible post, OP. Don't come here asking people to bash VA Tech to make yourself feel better. My kid is not going to VA Tech and didn't even apply, but if they were, I sure as hell wouldn't need you to put negative thoughts out there. Let me settle this for you - VA Tech is a great school by the accounts of many, many current and former students. Leave it at that! |
|
Sorry I can't think of one for you except that its OOS.
Why are you looking for a horror story? Everyone I know who went to Tech loved it and has a strong loyalty to it. |
|
PP here. Maybe that read as rude. Obviously if Va Tech moved your DD from the waitlist it did pick her. I am just thinking she has done so much work to get acclimated to the other school but how does she feel? We had a kid who was waitlisted by Virginia Tech and ultimately realized another school was a better option and withdrew their application. Our kid has had a fabulous freshman year.

I went to Tech for grad school and loved it. It’s an excellent school. A drawback is that it’s a long drive down I-81 from the DMV. Other than that, it’s great.
Congrats to your future Hokie! |
| What is the other school? |
| OP here - I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to offend. My attempt at playful tongue in cheek did not translate to an anonymous forum (go-figure, I should know better). We are looking at pros and cons of both schools and are really just trying to see if there are any cons we are not seeing for VT (other than OOS). It IS a great school which is why she is having such a hard time. This has really thrown her (us) a curveball so we are just trying to help her make the right choice. |
We don't know where your live, what the other school is or what her major is, so very hard for us to comment something constructive. Because Tech has such a loyal alumni, you probably won't find many who find this humorous. |
| The cafeteria food is very good so a lot of freshmen gain weight. |
| Well, once you chose VT…you will also go thru the same steps and feel connected. If VT was her first choice initially…go back to the why on that decision. |

What state do you live in?
I-81 can be dangerous driving, and if you are allowing you teen to do the drive, I'd emphasize not speeding. I had a classmate killed in a car accident on 81 one August on his way back to school. It was a wrenching way to start the year. It's in the mountains and the fall is absolutely gorgeous. Oh wait, bad things only. Hmm. I went to VT and loved it. |
| My sister went to VT, and got really addicted to tanning for a few months. It made her look AMAZING in her Halloween costume, but 15 years later, she probably has to spend a little more on skincare. |
A lot of VT kids get reckless tickets on I-81 too. So, increased legal fees could be a factor. |
| If she goes to Tech, she will need to cover her car in Hokie swag. That can get expensive. |
