Tell me your Va Tech horror stories (or even mildly annoying ones)

She commiteed to another school and she's been going through the process of picking out her meal plan, signing up for the roommate matching insta, registered for orientation, we even reserved a hotel for parents weekend so has started to develop an affinity for it. She's torn, she loves VT and they have a better program for what she wants to study, but there are definitly pros to the school she choose as well (not a safety, same par as VT). Finances are not an issue. Why should she NOT go to VT? We're defintily looking at things carefully, just curious about others' thoughts.
It is in a very isolated place, so if you have any mental health concerns that may be exacerbated by feeling "out there alone" I think that is definitely a consideration. It is hard to get acclimated to the feeling of being in the middle of no where for a lot of kids.

Purdue, Engineering

Purdue Engineering is a much stronger program and has more established programs to support women in engineering than VT.

This!! If you can afford it, Purdue Engineering is the better choice for many reasons.

I wouldn’t call it isolated. There are 36,000+ students and the z
Blacksburg-Radford Met area has 181,000 students. I don’t have a student there but visited three times and lived the place, as did DD who ultimately went to UVA. It’s not a tiny Slac in the middle of nowhere and tge Hokie pride is immense. That being said, if you are a New Yorker, yes it will be an adjustment but it would not have been for nova-raised DD. Buses run frequently btw. DD ultimately used both bus and train to get back and forth from UVA.

^^ meant to say 181,000 citizens in the Blacksburg Radford met area.

Purdue is the better school but... Indiana. Such a backwards state.

My kid went to IU and I hated that drive.

The better school? Not in my opinion.

VA tech gets points for fun but it is steps below Purdue Engineering. There is a reason Purdue engineering is globally recognized and the #4 Engineering grad school in the US. That said, VA tech is a very nice school that kids love an they get a good education.

Your opinion is irrelevant.
Purdue ranks among the top 200 Univiersities in the world. VT doesn't even make the list.

Purdue is a clear cut better choice for Engineering. She should stay there.

She has other great options but she is sort of in love with VT, while I am concerned that it is too big. I mean: it's enormous! And she has ADHD. Can anyone comment on how easy/hard it would for a humanities/social sciences kid with ADHD to make friends and manage the various logistical challenges associated with being at a huge school?

I can’t comment on the ADHD part, but as a parent of an ADHD child, can you set her up with an executive functioning coach for freshman year to make sure she stays on track? Checking in with someone virtually could be all she needs.

I did go to VT and can tell you that by the time senior year rolled around, the campus felt small. It felt like I had been to every party, seen every person, done everything there was to do. (I take that to mean I made the most of my time there.). Once she gets acclimated, things won’t seem so overwhelming.

I have no horror stories, OP - I'm a VT alum and absolutely loved my four years there. It's my daughter's first choice school (she's currently a junior).
