It is in a very isolated place, so if you have any mental health concerns that may be exacerbated by feeling "out there alone" I think that is definitely a consideration. It is hard to get acclimated to the feeling of being in the middle of no where for a lot of kids. |
This!! If you can afford it, Purdue Engineering is the better choice for many reasons. |
I wouldn’t call it isolated. There are 36,000+ students and the z Blacksburg-Radford Met area has 181,000 students. I don’t have a student there but visited three times and lived the place, as did DD who ultimately went to UVA. It’s not a tiny Slac in the middle of nowhere and tge Hokie pride is immense. That being said, if you are a New Yorker, yes it will be an adjustment but it would not have been for nova-raised DD. Buses run frequently btw. DD ultimately used both bus and train to get back and forth from UVA. |
| ^^ meant to say 181,000 citizens in the Blacksburg Radford met area. |
The better school? Not in my opinion. DP |
Aww. Sorry your kid wasn't accepted.

VA tech gets points for fun but it is steps below Purdue Engineering. There is a reason Purdue engineering is globally recognized and the #4 Engineering grad school in the US. That said, VA tech is a very nice school that kids love an they get a good education. |
Yes, the food at tech is amazing! |
Your opinion is irrelevant. Purdue ranks among the top 200 Univiersities in the world. VT doesn't even make the list. https://www.4icu.org/top-universities-world/ --Mich grad (aka no dog in this fight) |

Purdue is a clear cut better choice for Engineering. She should stay there.

I can’t comment on the ADHD part, but as a parent of an ADHD child, can you set her up with an executive functioning coach for freshman year to make sure she stays on track? Checking in with someone virtually could be all she needs. I did go to VT and can tell you that by the time senior year rolled around, the campus felt small. It felt like I had been to every party, seen every person, done everything there was to do. (I take that to mean I made the most of my time there.). Once she gets acclimated, things won’t seem so overwhelming. |
| I have no horror stories, OP - I'm a VT alum and absolutely loved my four years there. It's my daughter's first choice school (she's currently a junior). |
