Breast surgeon for teen (BCBS federal)

Anonymous
My teenage girl really wants/needs breast reduction surgery. She is a 32G and it interferes with sports, makes it very hard to find clothes, and results in bathing suits looking too revealing no matter how hard we try to find one that fits correctly.

We found a surgeon we liked but they just notified us they no longer take our insurance - BCBS federal. I have researched the requirements for coverage and it would be covered under their policy under the circumstances.

Does anyone have a surgeon they recommend?

Thank you!

No idea but I wanted to bump this and say good luck.

You might post in the Health and Medicine forum for recs. Doctors who specialize in breast reconstruction after cancer might be your best bet as those procedures are covered by insurance. They often do reductions on one side to match a reconstructed breast and are sensitive to underlying medical issues.
Dr. Samir Rao in Chevy Chase/Annandale takes BCBS FEP.

That is not medically required surgery. No health insurance will cover that. It's a cosmatic surgury.

That's not necessarily true.

It would be more helpful if you can tell us why it's not true.

It's not cosmetic if its causing pain/back issues/etc. OP said she did the research- so no reason not to believe her.

No, but a word of caution -- "doing the research" isn't the same thing as "pre-authorization." So she probably wants to confirm it will be covered rather than just "doing the research" by reading the policy.

OP, you want to go to Dr. Roger Freidman in Rockville. Best plastic surgeon in the DC area.

Yes it is. Where did Op say her DD was having back issues?

The back issues need to be the reason, OPs complaints are all cosmetic.

OP - you need to find a doctor who is willing to diagnosis her with back issues. Insurance will review your paper very carefully by the way.

Wrong. Back pain, hunched over causes postural issues that can lead to much, much worse. I had a reduction at 18 (late 50s now), and it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. Covered by insurance, as will her DDs
