+1000 - if TJ's mission was to win Science Olympiad and place kids as Intel or Siemens finalists or to get kids into Ivy League schools, you might have something of a point with the sports comparison.

But it isn't. So you don't.

DP. Are you sure about that? TJ is ranked as the #1 school in the country and carries a ton of prestige largely due to winning many academic competitions. A lot of people in Fairfax would view that as TJ's most important feature, and they would hate to see anything change at TJ in a way that would cause it to drop in the rankings and win fewer competitions.

^ I don't necessarily agree that TJ's mission is to be the #1 school. The fact that it is the #1 school undeniably draws a lot of people to Fairfax county.

The mission is to provide the best possible education for STEM oriented, capable students who will thrive at such environment and that is what TJ is doing.
Yes, I'm sure about that. The fact that the school DOES win many competitions and is ranked highly is not evidence that doing so is its mission.

TJ is objectively NOT providing the best possible education for those students when there are plenty of STEM oriented, capable students from various backgrounds who are excluded from the school by an admissions process that results in de facto segregation. No, it is not de jure segregation, but the impact is the same as if it were.

There is no end of peer-reviewed, well-respected research that cements the idea that legitimate diversity across a broad range of metrics results in a stronger learning environment. TJ has NEVER provided such an environment for its students, and as such, they graduate without much of the cultural literacy that is gained by students at equally rigorous but more diverse schools.

Exactly right! The old system was corrupt and gamed. The newer one may not be perfect but it is a huge improvemetn.

+1000. We must never allow the perfect to be the enemy of the good when we are seeking a stronger academic environment through more positive representation. The simple act of eliminating the students who were admitted through the prep process and parental ambition rather than their own aptitude and achievements is a huge step in the right direction.

Yes, we should root out parents buying sat scores and bribing admissions officials like the dozens of parents who were involved in varsity blues.

PP. Completely agree! We should do all of these things! Crappy behavior by white people should be punished too - I'm glad you agree!

TJHSST Offers Admissions to 550 Students; Broadens Access to Students Who Have an Aptitude for STEM
News ReleaseJUNE 23, 2021
Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST), a Governor's School within Fairfax County Public Schools that is regularly ranked as one of the top public schools in the country, has offered admission to 550 students for the Class of 2025.

This is the first class to apply under the revised admissions process which eliminated the standardized admissions test for TJHSST, eliminated the $100 application fee, raised the minimum GPA, and expanded the freshman class from 480 to 550. Seats in the TJHSST freshman class were also allocated for the top 1.5% of applicants from every middle school.

For the first time in at least 10 years, every FCPS middle school has students who were offered admission to TJHSST. The students accepted for the Class of 2025 are high performers and are well prepared for the school’s academic rigor. At 3.9, the average GPA for applicants is higher this year than it has been in the past five years. The average GPA for students offered admission remains extremely high at more than 3.95.

Last fall’s changes to the TJHSST admissions process also resulted in a significant increase in access for groups who have faced barriers to entry, including special education students, students eligible for free and/or reduced-price meals, and English Learners. (See chart below.)

Superintendent Scott S. Brabrand said, “Last year, Fairfax County Public Schools moved to ensure increased access and opportunity to TJ for students with an aptitude and passion for STEM. The data around TJ’s prospective freshmen class speaks volumes to the fact that when we truly center our work on equity, all of our students have an opportunity to shine.”

The new admissions process continues to be merit based and is race blind. Students are allocated a number by which to be identified during the process. Admissions evaluators do not know the race, ethnicity, or gender of any applicant.

Established in 1985, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology is a Governor’s School, emphasizing the sciences, mathematics, and technology. The school’s mission is to provide students with a challenging learning environment focused on math, science, and technology; to inspire joy at the prospect of discovery; and to foster a culture of innovation based on ethical behavior and the shared interests of humanity.

Race blind? We should remove the names and put student ID numbers to be truly race blind. Everyone knows what Hispanic and Asian last names look like. Congratulations to all those that got in. Keep up the good work.

20% decline in offers to Asian students from previous years. Mission accomplished!

The press release touting the offers to kids at a variety of middle schools is hilarious. Of course there are offers to kids at many middle schools -- that was required by the admission process -- there was a quota (that didn't even allow kids who went to the Center school to be counted with their base school).

It will be interesting if anyone opts to stay on the waitlist. June 23rd is already ridiculously late to know which high school you will be attending in the fall. Not many kids want to hang out until August and not know (especially given the new TJ experience this process will yield).

Admission percentage for Whites increased by 25%.

The percentage for Asian dropped by 30%.

This was predicted in the lawsuit.

You see how they listed each group in terms of their relation to previous years and then magically change format for Asians to not have to say they offered 20% fewer? So much spin.

So this whole TJ reform thing is to increase white and decrease white students ? Why is that a surprise? Racism and white privilege still thrive.

# of Asian students in the class of 2024 = 355
# of Asian students in the class of 2025 = 299

Cry me a river. Seriously.

# of Black students in the class of 2024 = TS (less than 10)
# of Black students in the class of 2025 = 39

# of Hispanic students in the class of 2024 = 16
# of Hispanic students in the class of 2025 = 62

America is a disgusting country built on and governed by racism. It needs to be torn down for a complete rebuild.
