Oh and when my kid is having an off game, I’m the first thinking “pull him out”. |
Yea, I agree with this as well. My DS did Futsal this past winter and it helped so much. Especially with one on ones and tight spaces. One of the kids on his Futsal team was a beast at playing futsal — like really good (VDA player), but when I saw him at practice not too long after (ds was invited to a session) he was actually one of the mid to lower level players on boys vda — physically he struggled to keep up. I think pairing futsal over winter with some “strength” Training ( pushups, sit ups, small weights) is the way to go. |
+1 a club in North Virginia. |
| At what age do promotion from B team to A team become impossible. |
Agreed. Although my son does all that, and still, he is 10th percent in height and 15th in weight. He is a monster at futsal, but fairly mediocre (decent) at soccer. It's just a different sport. |
My kids are both better at Futsal...even my older son who is tall and muscular. They are both VERY technical players with quickness in tight paces. They are good outdoor, but really good in Futsal and prefer it to outdoor. My younger son is small and skinny for his age so definitely excels in that arena. |
Never - at a good club. |
I don’t think it ever becomes truly impossible. I think once kids are in their sophomore and junior years they tend to just accept where they are. Not always. I’ve noticed some coaches are lies likely to demote or make space for a kid before those prime recruiting years |
Futsal really exposes players that have poor first touch, technical, and passing skills. Playing outdoors on a large field, size and speed can mask the lack of ball skills. |
You mean bad club as in BRYC. |
Yes I agree with that, but it also depends on the club too. Feeder clubs will have more spots available (or need more help) in the older age groups. Top U15 and up players will get picked off some, so it opens up more possibilities to make the A team. |
We are at a good club where the A team is one of the best in this area. I don't think it will ever happen but I think my son is fine with that. He just plays for the love of the game and never mentions it. |
Unfortunately although a large part, soccer is not just technical skills. You need everything listed above, plus the speed, stamina and strength to excel. |
agreed. |
Futsal doesn’t really expose poor technical skills. The smaller weighted ball, lack of areal play, and lack of space to play at speed actually makes futsal a poor proxy for technical skills. It’s a mistake to believe that someone who plays futsal well will be able to to be a technical player at soccer. |
