College and University Discussion
I have to add though, someone like Central Park Karen should face real life consequences. I just wish the jury of social media wolves weren’t the ones to decide her fate. |
+1. |
Yeah, I get it. A PP said Gen Z is going to whiplash, I agree. There is a book called The Fourth Turning about generational differences throughout history, it's a good read. |
Well, goody for you. That's your opinion that many of us do not share. |
| OP where do you draw the line on cancel culture? UMDCP changed the name of the football stadium because Byrd was not just a racist of the time but an active one at UMD. Princeton is changing the name of the the Woodrow Wilson school for similar reasons, although to some those are less clear/obvious as Byrd. UPenn and U of Iowa removed Steve Wynn's name from buildings because of sexual misconduct/assault. Do you support any of those moves? None? |
So what are we going to do about this as a culture? I am in the same boat as OP. I don't want to spend 70k a year to have my children brainwashed into being enforcers of some type of cultural revolution. |
It’s not my opinion. I’m white. Black people have expressed this, so I conveyed it. You didn’t appear to consider it all with your first patronizing statement. |
I think there has always been a woke far left, they’re just now extremely loud. I think the best thing you can do is promote more centrist values like the PP said, and continue to vote for centrist politicians willing to hear other voices. I would put Biden in this camp. I think it’s a good thing that he’s not liberal enough for some people. He shouldn’t be, he is everyone’s president and I respect that he said our country needs a strong Republican Party. I’m a democrat and agree with him that a continued pull to keep democrats closer to the center is important. |
Honestly, I think the majority of liberals think that it has gone too far but are too scared to say anything. Most people fall in the middle and reject either extreme. I think that if we just speak out more against the nonsensical cancels (not Central Park Karen, e.g), we can move the needle. I've started being vocal about this with more of my friends and have discovered to my surprise that I'm not really in the minority here. |
Please explain what you've read on the subject and your self-examination process that led to that opinion. |
I'm from Santa Barbara, and I'm not sure UCSB would fit the bill. I'm thinking maybe more along the lines of Cal Poly SLO. Also the military academies. They have a way of moving past all the BS. The problem is getting accepted; now there's a hard task |
| Don't forget Liberty. |
- you want to risk the health of teachers and the community during a deadly pandemic? - you want to insert your opinion into the decisions of other families and their doctors? - you want to ignore racial injustice? I can see why you'd want to keep those opinions to yourself. |
1. School closings do not fall on party lines. Most my conservative friends have opted to keep their kids home. 2. So you think people under the age of 18 should not get contraception without a parent's consent, or a vaccine? This is not about gender, it's about medical care... that is how the law works, you can't just pick 1 type of treatment and make a different rule about it. Some parents don't believe in cancer treatment, is that okay? 3. How is that related to colleges? |
