Universities and Colleges with less Cancel Culture?

DP. I don't even watch or read RWNJ outlets. I'm a liberal. You don't have to subscribe to RWNJ theories to recognize that today's progressivism is vicious and that the right to non-offensive speech is undermining the free exchange of ideas that is essential to a college education, and our democracy, but that's another story.

Cancel culture is real. How do I know this? I'm a liberal, but I do not feel free to express my opinions. Some of my opinions I don't feel free to express (except anonymously):
- I disagreed with closing schools and think schools should be 5 days a week
- I disagree with giving minors gender transforming hormones without their parent's consent because the long term health consequences are unknown, and I don't believe a 13-year-old has the wisdom to permanently transform their body in irrevocable ways
- I think that the focus on identity politics is divisive, brings out the worst in our country, and ignores huge swaths of the population that don't fit neatly into one group (my family, for example)

Were I to express these views publicly, I would probably face dire professional consequences so I sit quietly on the sidelines.

- you want to risk the health of teachers and the community during a deadly pandemic?
- you want to insert your opinion into the decisions of other families and their doctors?
- you want to ignore racial injustice?

I can see why you'd want to keep those opinions to yourself.

Another fine example.

PP with legitimate, articulate thoughts and concerns is a Neanderthal I guess. Thanks OP, you presented a real and provocative topic, many of these responses demonstrate your concern is real.

Haha. PP provided no legitimate/reality-based support for her opinions.

Yes, they did, and you just proved the point of this thread. No one is allowed to have opinions other than yours, sad...BTW PP never announced their pronouns, how dare you assume it was a "her".

I default to she/her on a mommy board.

And, no, PP did not provide any support for their opinions. Go re-read.

There is an "and Dads" to this site but OK. On your other point I was referring to the bold above, all articulate, legitimate points unless you are a complete close minded human like you.

Other than UChicago, your best bet is to go somewhere more diverse and less affluent. By diverse, I don’t mean a school that has sons of white doctors and sons of black doctors. Pick a school that has a good % of veterans, people who do not enter right out of high school, kids who grew up on a farm, etc, etc. They are more interested in actual learning than getting a tailored curated life experience that includes social justice with some training wheels, because they already know what life outside a bubble is like.

Honestly, I think the right (and a lot of PPs) is playing it fast and loose with the definition of "canceled." Dr. Seuss was "canceled" because his own foundation decided to stop making new copies of 6 of his books. The OP is being "canceled" because people are disagreeing with her on this thread. But Kathy Gifford wasn't "canceled," and neither was Liz Cheney. How do you square that?

I have two problems with the whole "Cancel Culture!!!" knee-jerk response. First, it proves too much: if you disagree with someone's views, that's cancel culture because...people should be free to express their views? Why would that apply to the original speaker, but not the person disagreeing with them? And if that disagreement comes with consequences, shouldn't the response be to allow more speech, so supporting sides and opposing sides can also be heard? Is it really Cancel Culture, or are you just losing in the marketplace of ideas?

Second, the right (and by this I mean right-wing politicians, fox news, etc., not right-leaning individual people) is very obviously wielding it in bad faith, acting hypocritically to distract from the fact that they aren't putting forward any good policy ideas, or any policies at all, besides Love Trump, Own The Libs. If they can keep people pissed off about Cancel Culture, then their voters won't pay attention to the fact that their party hasn't been able to come up with a health care policy in over a decade, or taken any action that's addressed economic disparity, etc. They ran this play with gay marriage and the War on Christmas, and now it's Cancel Culture. I keep waiting for conservative voters to wake up, but they just seem to really, really like being angry victims.

OP, I think your DC should see which colleges seem appealing for other reasons and then think about the politics of the campus. Many of these campus cancel culture stories are portrayed in the media as phenomena that have taken over a whole campus, but at a larger school with a wide range of students there may be a segment of the student population whose tactics you don't agree with, but if that's not for you, you avoid it. As a rule, I would think that the smaller the school the more impactful any sort of student movement is, and you should take that into consideration. And yes some schools are known for attracting more progressive activist students, but I suspect you know which ones those are. It's not a choice between Oberlin and Hillsdale.

NP. There is no risk to teachers or the community by having schools open now. Stop lying.

I don't care what the hell other families do; I want my kids in school. Thankfully, they are in a private that is 100% open.

You're right. There isn't a deadly pandemic. What was I thinking?

PP didn't provide any substance for the three opinions they explicitly listed (in blue).

I do have an open mind - please try convince me that any of those opinions are correct. I'm very happy to debate them.

Or don't - just complain that you're a victim so you conveniently don't actually have to defend yourself.

You are caught in the prison of two ideas and that is where this country is doomed. If you think for one second that the Dr. Seuss foundation's decision to stop publication of those 6 books wasn't simply to get in front of a CC landslide than you are intellectually dishonest. It was a bow to the CC masses to pull 6 or risk Dr. Seuss forever. It was over illustrations, those could have been changed, the words were and are still brilliant. Conservative voters aren't angry victims, there is actual suppression of speech, it is about power and the left wields it, they own the major industries that communicate and influence, the fact you don't get that is telling. I'm pro choice, and pro legalization of marijuana. I'm Latino not LatinX, support a family and love this country, I weep that paradigms such as yours and many on this thread just can't get past the dichotomy of right and left and realize that the Constitution is great and should be followed, it is a gift and we in this country all have a voice...it should be allowed to be spoken no matter the words, on any platform and not suppressed by those that control information.

But I think that not being able to freely speak your mind without facing dire professional consequences is the essence of cancel culture. It's scary.

So should anyone be able to say anything without professional consequences?

Who determines what is acceptable or not?

Also, is it OK to express blatant lies?

Hmmm.... "both are to blame." Really? It's only the right that brings their guns to protests. It's only the right that attempted an armed terrorist coup against our democratically elected government. It's only the right that wears tshirts glorifying the holocaust.

Your entire rant is such total BS. Sit down and shut up until you are ready to address the fact that slightly less than half of the country has decided to give up on democracry in favor of violence, terror and lawlessness.

If you read about privilege, the is the exact definition of it. Not wanting to deal with racial issues when POC have to deal with it daily. Opting out of a discussion that affects their livelihood is privilege.

I’ve learned this through reading up on it.

Well, goody for you. That's your opinion that many of us do not share.
