College and University Discussion
No, I don't. OP, we're in the same boat and I look forward to serious responses here. DC is at a Big 3/5 - we ARE a conservative family and are seriously considering a school like Hillsdale. |
| I think students get a good balance at most well-ranked national universities, but the SLACs - even the well-ranked ones - can be less tolerant of the less tolerant. |
Actually, they are quite tolerant of the less tolerant. It is the less tolerant who are the bullies who are currently running the show. |
As a liberal, I stand for free speech, a diversity of ideas, the right to oppose overarching governmental power, etc. I have been a loud, vocal and passionate opponent of the last administration. That said, the current environment of one-size-fits-all political and social opinion (at our DD's liberal school) is - well - chilling. I have protested for the rights of all people to be heard over the years - and I protested this last repugnant administration. I certainly did not do that so that once a new administration came into power, we'd shut down dialogue, respectful free-speech, and an open exchange of ideas. Schools - whether high school or college - should be a place to explore ideas (and sometimes try on points of view to see if they fit). How can students do that when they are walking on egg shells in fear that they say the wrong thing and get forever-labeled and "canceled." This is not good for anyone. |
Trump wants Fox News to cancel Karl Rove. That's Trump's m.o. He's told Fox News to cancel anyone who does not agree with his talking points Conservatives are the ones who don't want dialogue. They want you fired or censured. |

+1 on a big school in the south. My DS is liberal and a democrat and attends University of Florida. His school has democrats and republicans and is open about both.
During the election there were active young democrats and young republicans on campus, and florida has a lot of conservative main stream citizens so there were lots of ads and other Trump support. And the school is more open to both ideologies because it's located in a conservative state with a conservative government. My DS is happy about it and finding it refreshing to be out of the very liberal bubble he was used to in the DMV. |
Yet it was the only school we toured where every single presenter and tour guide in the info session introduced themselves with their pronouns. (I support that—just saying that the conventions of liberal academia are omnipresent. ) |
You don't? You don't remember conservative cancel culture? You don't remember "freedom fries"? You don't remember radio stations burning piles of Dixie Chick CDs because one of them said on stage she was ashamed of GWB? Really? I certainly remember being called UNAMERICAN and "hating the troops" because I listened to Colin Powell's speech at the UN and frankly didn't think he made his case for starting wars - that by the way two decades later, we're still in. You can have dialogue all day. Conservatives this week are calling Dr. Seuss's estate's decision to stop publishing a few books "cancel culture". That has nothing to do with dialogue. Who, exactly, is supposed to force the publisher - a private business - to publish stories and images they can no longer defend? There's not even a conservative rationale for forcing a publisher to keep publishing these books, they just want to whine about "cancel culture". I'm sorry you're falling for it. |
You already have your answer. Chicago and red state flagships. Liberty, BYU, Hillsdale. What else are you looking for? |
It means not holding neo-nazi's accountable for their horrid thoughts. |

| Team OP. I’m pretty liberal but it’s become a bit much. We lost the working-class and need to figure out a way to reach a swath of folks, not just focus on identity politics. I’m in favor of most of the ideas but not the dogmatism (as a PP noted, I’ve had my fill of that from the right). If we don’t want this country to completely fracture, as it almost did in this past election, we have to figure out a better way. Pronouns are not the problem here. And the economic elite like those at area privates being smug and hyper about cancel culture is not the way. Maybe private s should be canceled, since they propagate economic disparity and school inequality, despite whatever scholarships they dole out. Siphoning kids away from the public school system is worse than being careless about pronouns or reading Dr. Seuss. |
| Freedom fries and Dixie Chicks? That’s your evidence for cancel culture on the right? |
Exactly. I can easily remember conservative christians banning books. They had actual bonfires to ban books! Crazy. |
You can't have it both ways. If you shut down conversation than you are the cancel culture you hate. Sometimes, it is good that we cancel people. In the old days we canceled people all the time..divorced? having an affair? pregnant and not married? So this is not new. |
