Most 13-year-olds, boys in particular, can eat a horse and then eat a cow 2 hours later. We have rail frail wasps here projecting their own food issues onto their kids. It comes out of fear that another wasp frail friend might comment that her kid "gasp" might have pudged up! (read, his collar bone is not protruding like he just left drug addiction program) Then, we get a post wondering why her kid gained a few and is no longer 70lbs at 13 years old! And how to get him to lose a bit of a belly! Yes, we really have posts like that stating that a kid has man boobs and is not even 90lbs! |

I don’t see a lot of posts like that. Find and paste three threads within 6 months that are like this and I’ll admit you are right. I have tween boys ( one is athletic but neither are overweight) and they absolutely can eat a lot of junk and then not be hungry for dinner. So I think you are generalizing and making stuff up. |

| I have not controlled my kids snack habits since they were probably in 3rd and 5th grade. We keep quite a bit of junk food in the house. DH and I both eat in moderation, ensuring we have mostly healthy foods, balancing proteins, vegetables, grains etc., and provide healthy meals to the kids and always have. We exercise and are both fit and healthy. Modeling this for our kids seems to work, or at least help. Though we don't tell them what to have a for snacks, both kids gravitate to the more healthy options--cheese, fruit, yogurt. Neither would grab cookies or dessert type food as snack during the day. Both go for pretty big desserts after dinner, however. They are both healthy athletes who know that they can do that, since they make healthy choices all day and neither feels the need to deprive themselves. This, by the way, is the most thought I have put into my children's snacking, ever, in my life. I don't know how some of you have the time or energy to put that much thought into kids' snacking. It's nuts. |
| Isn’t food and our relationships with it funny? You have people who feel it’s important to curate every bite that goes into their kids’ mouths and others who feel its awful to exert any control at all over what their kids eat. I think the best approach is probably somewhere in the middle. |

He is at a normal weight still, but is this normal? I noticed a lot of junk food wrappers in his garbage can which I didn't buy. Should I worry? Should I watch his diet? He stopped gaining weight. Now he is chubby and has a pot belly and moobs. He also grew out of a lot of his old clothes and is wearing a Husky Size in pants for his height when i took him shopping last week. | To someone who grew up in another country, the amount of shit food in the grocery stores here, and the huge amount of unhealthy take out food people eat, is pretty shocking. Kids don’t need snacks if they eat three good meals a day. And string cheese is not a healthful food. It’s processed crap that doesn’t taste anything like real cheese. |
I grew up here and agree with you. My kids are teens and so on their own for food other than dinner a home. But when they were little I didn’t have 5 kinds of “snacks” at the ready wherever we went, not needed or necessary for people eating adequate meals. |
