TJ is so done...

Right now, the board is going a head, it’s up to TJ supporters to convince people to care, in my case I think the embarrassment caused by the URM numbers are a bigger factor than a school catering to people who frankly don’t need it

God, the mediocrity is blinding. You do realize education is a large determination of the economy of a state? That if you want good public colleges, you need strong students from the local area. My kids attended private colleges and boarding schools, but I still care about institutions like TJ.

You do realize TJ students spread far and wide, largely to out of state colleges, and go were jobs are after graduating college?

not sacrificed. it was a pork handout to upper middle class.

it is way overdue to be closed and turned back to a regular neighborhood school.

This is such a pitiful mentality. You should be thrilled that VA has some of the best public and private institutions in the country (HS and College). What is it about excellence that is so threatening to you? The way to make more winners is to have less losers; why don't you push for better teachers, resources, and hihgher standards during primary school years. I agree, the admissions need to change, but stop trying to drag people down. The goal should always be to create spaces for BETTER education. Jeez, at this rate will be one of those districts where school is only 4-days a week.

Why on earth should I care about TJ? If TJ were to close tomorrow is would have zero effect on me or anyone I know. It has nothing to do with me or my family and it’s URM numbers are an embarrassment.

It's URM numbers are an embarrassment because the performance metrics of the average URM applicant are an embarrassment. Fix that by supporting and providing programs to URM throughout elementary, and URM numbers will be less of an embarrassment.

I can't emphasize enough how unacceptable it is for people to even think that "who cares?" applies to this situation.

Yes they game the test because the test is easy and a low bar filter. If you can't game the test in style by studying minimally for it, you don't belong in TJ. But once you get to TJ those type of tests mean nothing. You get to play with stuff that most kids don't see, even in college.

STEM kids who would have gone to TJ will be heading to their base high school. Hope these high schools are ready!

Insofar as that's not just propaganda from the primary beneficiaries of the "new TJ," (read: the same people who boast a legacy which includes the Trail of Tears, slavery, dropping atomic bombs on civilian populations, ethnically-based black-ops torture sites, etc etc) I doubt that TJ is actually a refuge for students who fit that description.

On top of this, barring fixing the above problem (an insurmountable task for FCPS, who doesn't even have the guts to admit that URMs are doing very poorly in their beloved school system), Whites will become the prime beneficiaries of this Equity for All movement. Soccer moms are already chomping at the bit as we speak, salivating for the day where brawn will rule the roost from the gates of TJ.

Why would soccer moms wants their kids in TJ? Most are smart enough to realize their kids are better off staying in McLean or Langley and ending up in a better college than the majority of TJ grads. If you aren’t near the top of your class at TJ, you matriculate to average schools and if you are you go to great schools, but so do the top kids at every high school- it’s not worth the pressure

They aren't doing anything to prepare the targeted groups for TJ level work, are not doing anything to increase applicants from these groups or even asking why these groups dont want to attend/apply... but are just changing the mix of who is being accepted from the current pool. If URM are not in the current pool how will that help them gain admission?

We either have clowns running this or deceitful leadership.

If the kid has real interest in TJ STEM, there are lot of resources like Khan Academy, Youtube education and Libraries etc. Nothing can stop the kid. Now everything is online and at your finger tips.

President Abraham Lincoln is known to have completed his initial studies under street lights and had to struggle hard to survive during the initial few years of his life.

Right, and Lincoln never told a lie his entire life either.

There are great URM students who choose not to apply. This is low hanging fruit for FCPS leadership if they actually cared to move the needle.

Also, no, you can't expect children to know the full breadth of information available and how to access it. Parents and other adults need to help guide them. This is assuming they have reliable access to a computer and internet.

Not only that, there is a sabotage directed towards certain URM’s that has always been in place. It’s called the system of white supremacy.

A 13-month investigation has found “reasonable cause” to believe the public school district in Loudoun County, Virginia, discriminated against students of color who applied for gifted and talented programs.

And although Loudoun County Public Schools already have plans to end systemic racism, the final report, signed by Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring, concluded that more changes are needed.

Private schools look better all the time.

DP. It is absolutely true that this will benefit white applicants. My guess would be mostly to the benefit of white female applicants.

It was never the goal to actually help URM but making those (false) claims is what is going to get people to move. Anyone that cares to pay attention knows this will not help URM. But URM are being scapegoated and help up for scorn as a distraction while this underhanded way to get more white applicants in takes place. Just take a look at the other thread here on Asians to see all the anti-black and racist rhetoric because Asian percentages will be reduced.

Students of color deserve access to good education without racism. Private school should be a choice made freely.

It is, unfortunately, a decision now being made under duress, but you wouldn’t care why.
