Anyone heard from your teacher about classes today?

Dc teacher’s union is the reason why kids can’t go back to school. All teachers have a very flexible Wednesday. They need a “mental health day”? That is offensive to people who have real mental health concerns.

because the science actually shows you will not DIE. you need to do your job.

What other school district has as many black teachers and a 70% obesity rate (ward 7&8) and is in person?

I knew it was only a matter of time.

Why didn't you answer? How come white people only care about black people when it's a trend or convenient for them? It's really hurtful.

I’m sorry you expect more from a self entitled society.

Our teacher emailed to cancel school at 8:29 a.m. How thoughtful of her....Glad to see she really cares about families.

yeah I am normally very honest with my kid but can’t be now. He got an in-person slot so how am I supposed to explain that his teachers don’t want to teach him?

2nd grade is a great time for a lesson in nuance. Kids at that age are very bright and if lead through reasoning about a situation can walk away without feeling bad and learning a lot about empathy.

You do realize that four year olds and Pk teachers are in person at pretty much every early childhood center/preschool/daycare in the DMV and the country, right? Dc is unique(ish) in that they have free public preschool but preschools are open. Your teachers are just refusing to work.

+1. Former DCPS parent here--my kid is in an upper grade and not back in person yet, but the little kids have been back at her private since early Oct. No cases among teachers or students.

yeah, no. who’s going to have empathy for him? trying to explain this will only make him scared to return, think his teachers don’t like him, or that his teachers are wrong/stupid. “The teachers are so scared of covid they don’t want to teach you! And the other kids parents are mad their class sizes will be bigger. but you shouldn’t be worried.”

I care about the black kids being failed by the WTU. I care a lot less about adults who are failing them.

Caring more about education than black lives, nice.

Please. It’s not that dramatic. My 3rd and 4th graders know what’s going on and are just glad to have another day off Teams.

It’s wild the way some of y’all scream about how terrible and lazy teachers are, but you can’t do without one day of their distance learning. Which is it?

Collective action isn’t meant to be comfy.

Roll your eyes all you want, when you're black and you have lost a family member to covid and are overweight with high blood sugar, the fear is real.

I didn't really expect much empathy from you people since caring about black kids is only a guise. I DO care about all kids but I need to take care of my health. I've already lost 30 pounds since April and am continuing.

I'm sure many others are scared because of their health condition(s).

Right. So you have a great opportunity to teach empathy and about the world and instead you actually just want him to be coddled. If you choose to talk to him in a manner that this is an affront on him of course he will feel bad. You, as the adult, have a chance to frame the world as being bigger than him and more complicated than his initial emotional reaction. But that will require you to step outside of your own desires and emotions and use it as a growth opportunity.

I feel for your fear. Losing a family member rocked my world too but making this about race is the wrong move here. Most of these people on here complaining will throw their white neighbor under the bus just as quickly if it helps them personally. The guise of empathy runs way deeper than skin color. Shitty people don’t see color, they just see themselves.

How about the message the teachers have been communicating: Your teacher wants to stay your teacher, not for you to go in to school and have a different teacher. Your teacher wants to be able to hear your thoughts and ideas in the virtual classroom, if that’s where you stay, and we know how hard that is now with __ students in the class. Imagine having even more students in your live sessions! Your teachers want to make sure it’s the absolute safest environment possible so no one has to worry about you or your family and so when you do return to a school, you can feel safe and comfortable because you know they made sure of it.
