I would argue that American or U.S.A. to be more specific is an ethnicity/culture. Just as German is an ethnicity/culture. My cousins children's race would be Black, but their ethnicity/culture is forever German. Thus they are Black Germans. They say they have American relatives, but never define themselves as American anything. They are German, period.

Wikepidea definines Ethnicity as such: An ethnic group is a group of humans whose members identify with each other, through a common heritage that is real or assumed.[1][2] This shared heritage may be based upon putative common ancestry, history, kinship, religion, language, shared territory, nationality or physical appearance


Do not Americans have history, language, nationality, shared territory, kinship in common.

"Irish American (for example) would suggest that your parents came here. Irish descendant would imply that your grandparents or before arrived here.

Unless you just specify 1st generation (parents); second generation (grandparents); etc.

But some people like to claim they are more descendant than not."

German isn't a race it's a nationality.

People from different countries or even areas of the same country may have different cultural identities but have the same racial makeup. Where do you think the term "ugly American" comes from? Of course not all American's behave badly abroad, but it's been my experience that I can tell who is an American, well behaved or not.

Hmmm. Now I'm starting to think "American" is an ethnicity. I'm US born and raised and have lived worked and traveled on several continents. Can pass for a local in a few thanks to good language education. But I can always find "my people". We're the ones who speak just a bit louder on the train, have to remind ourselves that helmets aren't needed in football, salivate at the thought of a "real" burger. (We were the ones frontin' as Canadians during Bush 43.

This makes me laugh. I was in Amsterdam at the time the U.S. invade Iraq. I tried to pass myself off as a Canadian. I fooled noone, people kept saying, "you're American right. So, . . . ." I would respond, no I am from Toronto, but noone believed me. I guess you can tell American, but I was very well behaved. I simply do not know how they picked me out, as I see no difference from someone from Toronto, Canada or Albany, New York. Oh well.

I'm white from the very south of South America, so is my husband. Our grandparents were from northern Italy.
