Independent schools and "advanced" kids: national problem?

I laughed out loud at that one.

I think the "national problem" is that there aren't enough public schools out there like TJ and Blair. There is no "national problem" associated with private schools.

I saw a mom with a bog-standard kid, who is feeling a bit defensive!

Agree. If your kid is average, which for this area means working about one grade above, then your kid will be just fine in private. And if your kid needs more, you can walk away from private and go public. No problem!

The problem is that Weast is talking about cutting transportation to the magnets, and other cuts to the magnets. There are too many kids who are smarter than the kids of the mother who is sneering at Einsteins.

I realized this wasn't clear and this looked like I was insulting somebody else:

The mom calling others idiots has the bog-standard kid, and doesn't really care about the problem of educating kids who are smarter than hers, so she resorts to ad hominem attacks.

Just pointing out that you wouldn't have found Einstein by looking for kids who are one or more grades ahead in school. He was flunking out.

Nor could you have a 4th-5th grade GT class full of budding Einsteins in a magnet school that draws from a single county.

If these facts elude you, then you aren't very bright or knowledgeable. Don't blame the messenger!

Parents *who* are, not parents *that* are. Learn to write before you criticize others. Yeesh!

Because Einstein was bored out of his mind in a school that didn't challenge him. Your last sentence would seem to apply to you!

Actually, "that" is used to identify the characterization that follows as an essential/defining attribute rather than an incidental one. Word choice was deliberate and appropriate.

I'll put your question a different way (because I'm bigger than you and don't have to resort to pointless insults but instead I'd like to advance the conversation): Studies have shown that an IQ of 120 is sufficient to exceed in almost any field. Beyond that point, it's about creativity and drive.

So if the median IQ in the Takoma magnet is over 140, does that mean we shouldn't be challenging these kids?

I suppose I won't get a real answer, just more dumb insults.

"that" is for things, "who" is for people. Both define what they follow, that part is true. But choose the right one.

Sorry, you're too dumb to do anything but insult people. This is a waste of time and I'm out of here.

Actually, this poster has very nicely encapsulized why people are talking past each other on this thread. Some people don't know any super-smart kids, and as this post shows, they don't want to hear about them either. This allows them to go on insisting that one-year ahead is fine for every kid.

I don't understand why we are comparing MCPS magnet for science and math to more general private schools. A better comparison would be a science private to TPMS.
