Moms what age did your son surpass you in height?

Really? My son is almost 14 in 8th grade and there are lots of boys taller than he is at 5’9”.

These people are weird. Why would anyone make it up? My almost 14 year old 8th grader is 6’2” but… we’re a tall family. (His 12 year old sister is 5’7”.) He is usually the tallest kid on the basketball court but there are typically 1-2 kids that are around his height on any given team, and very occasionally an even taller kid.

Da hell

Look, we are tall. It wasn’t particularly fun being 5’10 as a 12 yo girl either.

I don’t think the moms of short boys are on this thread (except denying what we say is true). No one wants to say their kid is off to college and still shorter than they are. Moms of short boys get really defensive like it is some character flaw. No one is saying that.

Look, 5’9 at 14 years 0 months is the 93rd percentile. It’s just factually untrue that “lots of boys” are taller, or really even anywhere close to his height.

No you look

I am the 5’9” 13 year old’s mom and I didn’t write this reply- sounds like one of those immature and maybe fictionally tall 8th grade boys did

That was the case with my oldest son, younger one is later to puberty and will probably end up with the taller genes (5’1-5’2 in sixth grade with zero signs of puberty and always has tracked 85th-ish percentile). We have a mix of genes/heights in the family.

Or they’re going to be really tall and have always been really tall… or mom is short… this is a silly take, PP.

I mean it’s pretty general knowledge in pediatrics that earlier puberty generally equates to shorter adult height, so I wouldn’t say it’s a “silly take.” Of course there are always going to be exceptions.

I guess you missed my point that a son surpassing his mother in height at a relatively young age is not necessarily a reliable indicator of early puberty.

Sure, there are kids who just have always been/will always be super tall (generally with two excessively tall parents). But if a boy is taller than 5’4 or so (average female height) at 10 or 11, he almost always has started a pubertal growth spurt (especially since in the cases we’re discussing mom is not tall - even if dad might be). Despite some people’s misunderstanding, boys do not get their “height genes” strictly from their father’s side. Just telling you what we see in practice quite reliably.

This makes a lot of sense to me. I (mom) and 6' and my husband is almost 6'6". Our oldest has been 95-99th percentile for height his entire life. At 9.5 years old he is about 5 feet tall. A kid who is 5'4" at 10 or 11 is off the charts. If your kid wasn't already at 90th+ percentile leading up to that age, it makes a lot more sense that it's a pubertal growth spurt that will level off than some sudden change to how their growth curve will work.

In middle school. I'm 5'7, dad is 6 ft and ds is 6'1 now in 10th grade.

I’m 5 feet tall and my first DS passed my height at 13. I think my second DS will pass my height earlier as he’s not far behind even if several years younger.

Ok…you can not believe this.

Me 5’6; husband 6’5

Oldest is 15 and 6’1–he probably passed me at about 12.

Youngest passed me at 10. He is now 13 and 6’4 (projected to be 6’7).

Genetics are strange.

Not quite there yet. I'm 5'4" and DH is 5'7". Our 9YO is around 4'10" and he and I can wear his shoes. Both he and his younger brother have always tracked tall, but since neither of us is tall we assume they will just stop growing early. We shall see.

Our 6th grade has two boys that have passed 6ft. My own ds is still trying to get to 5' though. I don't really care how tall he will be but he cares a lot, for now

I mean, surely you realize a 6’4 13 year old is an extreme outlier? And that MOST middle schools will not have one?

NP: oh come on. In ANY area. I have 3 teen boys and have seen ONE kid like that in their large middle school classes over the years. 8th grader who was a legit 6’6” (and hated basketball- much to everyone’s amusement). There is always a handful of 8th grade boys around 6 feet. There is also always a handful of 8th grade boys 5’0” or less. Probably about the same amount for each TBH. Middle school boys vary dramatically but 6’4” for a middle school aged boy is an extreme outlier ANYwhere.

Ages ago. I think that generally the rule is that boys grow taller than their mothers. I’ve not known anyone who has a son shorter than they are. I’m tall at 5’8” and my sons are 5’11” and 6’3” and growing!
