It isn't good enough because what you described is not what Gaetz said. There is a serious gap. Either Gaetz is stretching the nature of the relationship, or else there is something seriously creepy going on. I opt for the former.

I grew up with a family I refer to as a third family on the side. The kids call me 'aunty'. I'm not their real aunt. That does not mean I'm trying to sleep with any of them, FFS.

Do you publicly claim them as your adopted children? No? Not weird then.

When people ask me who they are, I say, my nieces and nephews. Gaetz sees him as a son

But he doesn’t have an adopted son, and he has never claimed him until now? His “son,” while being Latinx, is not black, so he used him as a prop to score a point in a debate. He trotted out his hidden “black” “son” to prove that he isn’t a racist. Gross. And the whole story is really bizarre. Don’t worry though, Twitter is on it. Optics fail.

+1 he is trying to get ahead of a story or divert one

Amazing what defenders on the right will do to contort themselves to any sort of justification.

So why hasn't he legally adopted him? Bizarre.

Turns out he never adopted the boy. This story gets weirder and weirder.

You never called your nieces and nephews "helpers" or "local students"? That doesn't sound like "sees him as a son".

This is very common when you grow up with them. We have a family like this where my son calls our adult friends "aunt and uncle". However, this is not the same as being a parent. I think you would agree.

Publicly claim them as your adopted children, after keeping them secret for years, and finally coming out only for purposes of claiming you know what it's like to raise a black child in totally non-racist America

This whole thing is so freaking bizarre - and also, totally on brand for Gaetz

Some liberals (particularly the ones on DCUM) are totally incapable of presuming positive intentions with ANY Republican.
It's a sick state of mind.

The best case scenario with this, is that he is using this kid as a political prop, which is utterly despicable.

Gaetz was dating and maybe living with Nester’s sister Maisbel (May) Mendez when the mom Ana Matos died. Gaetz was her lawyer seeking custody/guardianship of Nester over the bio father Nester Sr. The Gaetz name and influence in Florida Won the case but more or less based on the expectation that Nester would live in the Gaetz household. At some point the sister moved out of Gaetz’s house and was still the guardian but Nester remained in the Gaetz extended family household. For whatever reason, Gaetz hasn’t called him his son until today when he needed a non-white son to make a political point, except that Nester is white.

This is what happened except that when May Mendez and Matt Gaetz broke up in 2017, she moved to Las Vegas and Nestor moved to the Miami area for a while, maybe to live with his bio dad. Nestor was on the soccer team at Mater Academy Charter in Hialeah Gardens in 17-18, but then he moved back to the Gaetz house for his senior year 18-19 and graduated from Choctawhatchee High School in Destin.

So to recap: Nestor's sister May lived with Gaetz, he helped her get co-custody of Nestor, and Nestor lived with them for a couple of years. When May left for Vegas, Nestor went to Miami area, but then Nestor came back to live with the rich and influential Gaetz family in the Panhandle.

Gaetz did good things, helping his ex with her brother and helping the brother after the break-up with the ex, but Nestor is not his son and Nestor is white, so Gaetz was out of bounds referring to Nestor as his "non-white son" to justify his All Lives Matter hectoring in a Congressional hearing.

He's 19 now, no longer a kid.

Gaetz's parents, of course.

on twitter there is a pic posted of Gaetz swearing in ceremony, his entire (extended) family. Guess who isn't in the picture...his "son". Weird, right?

Nestor probably will work for the Trump campaign in Florida if he isn't already.

Most likely right about the Trump campaign job. Gross.

"Of course"?! You think there's anything "of course" about any part of this story?
