Why was Gaetz hiding his kid in such a weird way all this time?!

When this “adoption” of a 12-year-old Cuban immigrant happened, Matt was 27 with a DUI or two. I’m highly skeptical. What agency or program would allow this?

All this says to me is that Matt Gaetz is gay. I guess it also says he groomed this poor boy.

So basically peak gooper.

I really hate that people are saying this. Let's say Gaetz was gay - he apparently helped encourage his father to legalize adoption to gay families in Florida: http://www.panhandlepolitico.com/escambia-news/gaetz-gay-adoption/ - that has nothing to do with adoption a child, or having a secret child, or being a pedophile.

There is nothing wrong with being gay.
There is nothing wrong adopting a kid.
There is nothing wrong with gay people adopting kids.

Why be so secretive about his son for so long? And how was he able to do this legally?

And make a 12 YO a target for liberal crazies on social media and elsewhere?

I can see why he kept it under wraps. The internet has not been kind to kids of politicians.

You are right. People were so mean to Chelsea Clinton.

No one says anything about Barron so not sure what you are on about.

I read into this that he possibly groomed a young boy because I don’t believe Matt cares about human life unless it is in service to Matt.

Stop spreading this false crap.
From Snopes:

Death of College Roommate

Mentions of a “suspicious” death of Gaetz’s roommate during his four years at Florida State University between 1999 and 2003, like the claims of seven DUIs, did not exist online prior to Madsen’s August 2016 piece, in which he stated:

What would be Panhandle politics without a dead body? Gaetz’s roommate at Florida State University was reportedly found dead under suspicious circumstances while they were undergraduate students. … Sources close to the investigation of the death, however, told [Wayne Madsen Reports] that the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigated the death as a possible homicide but the agency was later politically-pressured to rule it a suicide.
Madsen’s being the only source for this claim merits suspicion on its own: He has a history of making wholly baseless claims without evidence. A prominent proponent of the claim that former President Obama is not a U.S. citizen, he has, for example, falsely claimed that Barack Obama had “homosexual trysts” with Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick and Senate majority leader Bill Frist (among others), and Madsen is the author of a self-published book asserting that Obama’s rise to the White House was engineered by the CIA.

Not only is the suspicious “roommate death” claim flawed, but further doubt is cast on its veracity by the fact that we have been unable to identify any contemporaneous press accounts of suspicious deaths of a Florida State University student who could possibly have been a Gaetz roommate between 1999 and 2003. Though an administrator at Florida State University confirmed to us that roughly 30 students with expected graduations between 1999 and 2003 passed away during that time period, we found nothing publicly suggesting a Gaetz link to any case that received press coverage. As such, we consider the claim without merit.

There is no way that guy on the left is 18. He looks older than Gaetz. This explains Gaetz' dedication to Trump. Just like Lindsey Graham's. Trump is black mailing a couple of closet cases. Democrats wouldn't care but Republicans do. I do think grooming a 12 year old should be investigated.

I thought Republicans didn’t think that Snopes is a reliable source of factual information. Because when I’ve posted comments not favorable to the Right with links to Snopes, that’s what I’ve been told.

So this whole reveal happened because Gaetz objected to Rep. Cedric Richmond calling out Republicans for not caring about the threat to young black males, and Gaetz asked, "Are your suggesting that you’re certain that none of us have non-white children?" Since then he has revealed Nestor as his Cuban-born "son" who is maybe adopted, maybe not.

But isn't Nestor white?
Anonymous
Was he really 12 when he was "adopted"?

There have been cases of people posing as children when they were actually in their twenties... in order to get "adopted" to live in the US.

I believe this thread is ample evidence of why Gaetz didn't want to subject his adopted son to media scrutiny.

Perhaps Mr. Gaetz needs to be sent this thread to see what liberals in DC say when information such as this is made public.

liberals aren't against gay people adopting kids. That would be the other side. Why hide it?

perhaps then he should speak out against the lawsuit about preventing gay people from adopting.

I've heard the same comments from Dems on this board, such as, "I don't care what Snopes says".

I've never heard of anyone adopting a kid and then for years appear in photos together but always refer to their "son" as a local youth or my helper or my page, but never as my son or my child. That really does not sound like adoption or parenthood.

Well exactly. That's why it's weird.

If this is his kid, then I think it's fantastic that a single parent adopted a kid and gave him a good home. But why be so weird about it?!

Looking at the video where he called him his helper, it's pretty clear he was about to spew out a word that starts with "s". I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt that he is in fact his son, but he's clearly using him right now for political convenience, just as he has not identified him as his son in the past. He clearly panders to the Trump base and we all know how they feel about Hispanics. Now that it's politically convenient to say he got "offended" he's now identifying him as his son.
