Daycare to Reopen

Healthcare workers have protective gear
Many grocery workers have protective gear, some are even putting up plexiglass screens
Bus drivers have protective guards and social distancing now
Office workers have social distancing
What protection is there for childcare workers from germs?

The point I was making is that healthcare workers and others have to have childcare available. Otherwise there's no one to provide food for people or take care of patients.

I agree, but I’m not sure group childcare is the answer to that right now.

So then what’s the answer? And don’t say relatives because that’s usually older people who are at risk.

DP. The answer is whatever works for each family. That can be a non-essential spouse, non-elderly relative (not all grandparents are over 60), nanny or yes, if a daycare is open and that's the only option, better for the child to be safe there and the essential worker to work than the alternative.

What works "best" for the family is often the arrangement they already had.....

In Maryland we thought it was better to not have essential workers have to try to save patients AND find new childcare.

This poster isn't getting that most don't have family to just step in or a friend. We don't. Its a bunch of bad choices but a day care is far less risky in a pubic setting in terms of abuse and neglect than hiring a stranger.

I get it. I understand that some people need to go to work and have no options. I’m a childcare worker. I also have no options. My life is at risk. My family is at risk. Where are my options? Who is looking out for my safety? No one.

I’ll take that reply if you’re a front line healthcare worker and your life is on the line. If you’re headed for an office where everyone washes their hands and coughs into a sleeve, it’s not a comparison.

NP. The thing is, this is going to be with us a long time. You can shut down the daycares for a couple months, but then what? People will be expected to return to the workplace and ride public transport, kids will return to school. Maybe we will be testing everyone by then but I doubt it. You with live with that risk for the 18 months until the vaccine is available or take a break from the profession (which I 100% understand and know some who have already).
