5th Grade CogAT : Number Correct

Last year’s threads seemed pretty angry. Hoping this year can be more philosophical.

Our CES teacher sent home a note alerting us that the MS notices are coming out and reminding parents that the kids at school may have some big emotions about this, and to have empathy for people who are feeling or experiencing something different - basically asking them to congratulate their friends who got in and have empathy for friends who might be disappointed. Apparently there was some bragging and tears in school last year. Just reminding parents that what they say gets echoed by their kids in class.

Good luck, everyone.

Were grief counselors available?

Right?!? Pretty sure this would not even be a blip at our home elementary, and my DC wouldn’t know or care except that some of the kids in our CES have families that are REALLY into it and the kid drama is reflected by that.

Right. My nephew was in 5th grade when my SIL died of cancer so nowadays, every time I encounter this 'please have empathy for poor children living in million-dollar houses who didn't get into a magnet program" bullshit, it just rubs me the wrong way. Those CES sufferers who didn't get into TPMS will still be studying math at AoPS during the week and will get into high school magnets three years later.
Ugh.

Congrats! Mind to share the scores? Thanks!

Sure! 99th percentile across the board for Cogat, in both the national and MCPS comparisons. 264 Fall MAP-M. I can't remember the Fall MAP-R score, but I do remember it was 90th percentile. Accepted to both Eastern and Takoma Park, and he'll pick Takoma Park. DCC home middle school. We thought he had a fighting chance for Takoma Park, but are very surprised, though not unhappy of course, that he was also invited to Eastern.

Congrats, and thanks for sharing

I am really sorry to hear about your sister in law. That is terrible and so sad.
Please don’t assume everyone on here is rich. We are in an upcounty CES and most of my kids’ friends live in townhouses. They aren’t in trauma or anything, but they are anxious about the results. For some of them, their home middle school is not a great option. The teacher was just asking the parents remind their kids about kindness and to keep it low key. I think it is ok to have empathy for people who aren’t in the middle of shattering trauma, too.

I hope someone will post a waitpool response. Do those come in window envelopes or rip envelopes?

Agree. Deep sympathy about the SIL dying of cancer. BTDT. But it's hard for kids to be ranked against other kids, and some academic high-achievers have their self-worth tied up (either because of their own personality or their parents' neuroses) in their academic performance. Plus kids like to compare results. But the magnet programs have problems and some home schools are fantastic, so hopefully everyone will have a good middle school experience (or as good as it can be, since middle school inherently kinda sucks! )wherever they wind up.

High SES school, middle or lower?

Why do you ask? What would each answer tell you?

Is this a serious question? People been debating this subject for months on end. What it takes to get in differs depending on the SES group of your child's school.

The ones posting scores are aware that their kid is highly accomplished. It isn’t a normal population sample. It makes sense that the very few kids with incredible scores have parents posting on this thread right now.

Oh self-reporting is skewed toward the preppers, to be sure. Quantitative is the score that's easiest to bump. The fact that mom doesn't know enough everyday statistics to read a score report without spewing mumbo jumbo, is the next clue.

Be nice. I know people following this thread because their home MS stinks and because they have a child who doesn't quite fit in at their home MS. I don't think they prep but I don't think they posted scores either.

Which way does it skew? Higher SES means easier to get in, or lower SES means easier to get in?
