I am a reporter with a national news outlet _ we are forbidden from referring to people as "dr" unless they are actually a medical doctor. The bottom line is no one cares that you got a PhD in something outside of the university environment.

Well, I guess you’re not a NYT reporter—I’ve seen recently articles where they’ve referred to Ph.D.s as Dr. (after first establishing that they're Ph.D.s, not medical doctors).
