obviously ^^^^^^^^ this has never had a job with a contract...and has no clue how (Even though its very low level pro coaching,) professional sports works and the concept of no compete clauses most contract jobs |
The integrity of recruiting from the last club you were at can also be put into question. Those are some blurry legal and moral lines to cross. |

I read from the beginning of this blog and it put perspective on some rumors going on here at LMVSC. The most illuminating post for me was the one time-stamped 02/11/2019 14:51. That's a lot to digest as an SYC parent and it opened my eyes to your situation. However, after reading through eight pages of concerns, I've learned a lot about the issues facing both clubs through these postings. Here's what's going on at LMVSC.
On January 17th at 8:51 pm, LMVSC travel families received an email from our executive director wishing Este success in his future endeavors and informing us that "Esteban 'Este' Maldonado has resigned his Technical Director and head coaching responsibilities effective January 28, 2019, to join another club." It seemed odd timing, because his 03 Red Girls were heading to Florida the next day to compete in a national tournament. On January 20th, Este posted on his personal Facebook page at 10:21 am regarding an "Announcement Coming Soon" that included the SYC logo and hashtags #SYCSoccer #LetsgoSYC. His LMVSC girls were still in the tournament. Around the same time, some LMVSC parents received a Facebook message inviting them to like the SYC Facebook page. Not everyone received the invitation so it appeared Este was "selecting" a certain pool of families. On January 25th, LMVSC families received an email from our Executive Director announcing a new Director of our Player Development program. This position was held by Justin O'Shell who was in charge of that and our Recreational Development Program. I recall seeing job postings for Justin's positions sometime in December, so I knew he was moving, but I didn't receive an email announcing his resignation or departure. I found out through a friend that Justin moved to SYC and is in charge of your U7/U8 DA. That's a great selection by the way. Our loss is your gain. All of these issues plus rumors flying around the club have our children talking. They're talking at school, they're posting on social media, they're talking at practice, and they're talking at home. Parents are also hearing from some families that a coach asked them to go with him after the season. That got around to players who weren't invited and now they don't feel like they're part of the team. It's creating an unstable environment for players and parents. Aside from all these issues, the question remains will SYC get in CCL? When Alexandria was approved last year, I asked an informed source how ASA got in but not SYC. The answer focused on the fact that Alexandria can compete at every level (CCL Pro23, Premiership, Championship, and NextGen) with both boys and girls teams. That's not meant as a slight to SYC, it's just an informed assessment from a trusted source. In fairness, SYC is known for its size and the multiple programs offered. Travel soccer is only one part of the organization and not the central focus. Until I read this blog, I wasn't aware of how you are governed or the politics of the committee. I doubt that will change. Even if LMVSC coaches leave now or at the end of the season, if a significant number of players follow them, that's going to play "slice and dice" with your existing teams. That's not the normal expectation during tryouts, especially at the high school level. You expect to add or replace a couple of players, but not overhaul of a complete team. That's not a conducive environment for player development, which is the primary focus of CCL. Also, CCL has strict recruiting rules. This is taken directly from their Rules & Procedures, Section III, which appears in every division from CCL Pro23 to NextGen: "The CCL is opposed to the practice of recruiting players from one VYSA or MSYSA club to another at any time during the seasonal year, and in particular, from the start of the fall season until the conclusion of the spring season. The procedures outlined below govern player movement. CCL coaches and/or team or club officials who willfully recruit or attempt to recruit a player from a team participating in CCL shall be subject to disciplinary action by the Executive Committee." I'm no lawyer, but if this escalates to a matter of legal sufficiency, there may be additional fallout during the legal process. With all the above said, there's a lot of speculation about the timing of these departures and what's going to happen next. I'm glad people are discussing these concerns because whether you're SYC or LMVSC, we're all looking for answers affecting the future of our club, our teams, and our players. What the coaches do and where they go is their business, but when it comes down to possible conflicts of interest, the appearance of in-season recruiting, and disrupting our children's teams, then all parents want answers. |
Alexandria doesn't field teams in the CCLII (Championship). Their 2nd teams play in the NCSL. |
Sounds like SYC is getting a class act in their new TD. Classic recruiter rather than developer, even worse since he's just trying to raid his old club. |
| How did Alexandria get straight into CCL without having to go through CCL2 first? |
CCL is for clubs 'A' teams CCLII is for clubs 'B' teams Alexandria entered their A team into CCL. Their B team remained in NCSL. |
1) You're broadly, but not entirely, correct about recruiting vs. developing. 2) Can we stop with the BS about raiding clubs? I've observed ZERO recruitment at LMVSC. None. Not even a word from coaches about their intentions following the spring season. If coaches leave following the season and players want to go to another club to play for coaches with whom they have rapport and have enjoyed success, then that's their own business. |
Sorry to break this to you but neither LMVSC or SYC are destination clubs. Whatever their accomplishments are they likely do mostly through their own development and not through recruitment. |
| So far it looks like we hired a social media specialist rather than a TD. Spent the whole time at my daughter's game today on his phone. |
That has been our experience as well. |
Easy fix if you don’t want the td doing social media at your practices and games: don’t be on the blue teams.
|
| Kind of sounds like what’s been going on at CYA. Enhanced social media presence, very little substance. |
TD’s team at CYA seems to be doing fairly well in NPL league play |
Oh that’s good, I’m happy for them. However isn’t the TD also responsible for overseeing the club as a whole? |
