Yes, I'm a Democrat. Yes, I'm voting for D's for all the major offices (Senate, etc.) Yes, I have a lot of problems with R's right now. But I also think that our county board and school board can get a little too one-sided and it's good to have a little balance. I don't think it's healthy for a county to be run solely by one political party, regardless of which party that is.
Just post it on FB and be done with it.
Those of us who support Vihstadt need to say so. I think this will be a close race, and Arlington desperately needs independents. One party rule is not good.
^+1000 One party rule is bad regardless of which party it is.
"When we interviewed him for the primary, de Ferranti emphasized building housing that would be affordable across a variety of incomes and available to younger workers who can build income and own homes in the future."
I'm sorry, this is so ridiculous. I specifically asked de Ferranti at an event about this supposed plan and he had no specifics. He also mentioned current AH and the usual teachers and firefighters nonsense. I responded that income cutoffs for most Arlington AH, i.e., 60% of AMI, mean my nanny can't even qualify to live there and, while I pay her generously, I don't pay her what Arlington teachers (and I assume firefighters) make.
The vote has to be for JV to at least spread out AH throughout the county.
LOL, rookie cops make like 60k a year and have pensions. Cops don't live here and neither do firefighters, and they don't want to. They live in big houses farther out.
Fake News...several Cops live in Tuckahoe and Discovery neighborhoods
And McKinley.

Most ACPD DO NOT live in Arlington. Certainly no one who joined the force on the last 8 years. Can it with that crap.
You expect people to take you seriously with that level of discourse?

I DGAF how you take me. First responders live further out. The few dudes you know are the exception to the rule.

DP. This is a ridiculous argument. Is your assertion that they'd live in subsidized housing if it were available to them? They would not. They'd drive in from WVa before living in Arlington Mill residences with the person they were arresting yesterday afternoon. Come on now. Teachers, cops, firefighters either live in Arlington if they can afford a decent home in a safe neighborhood OR they move further out. Same as any other professional person. They would not live in a CAF. We're not building CAFs for first responders or teachers.

No $hit. I’ve made no commentary on why they live where they do, but it’s stupid to talk about the couple of cops who happen to live in 22205 or wherever.
This whole discussion is just silly. Of course Arlington first responders and teachers don't generally life in affordable housing. That is an APAH/VOICE myth. And a pretty played out one at that. No one even dignifies that with a response anymore. Like their claim that concentrated affordable housing in CAFs is good for schools because it decreases transience. No. What's good for schools is to avoid concentrating poverty in a few boundaries. But I digress. APAH's absurd argument doesn't make affordable housing any less admirable of a pursuit. Everyone should have housing they can afford. You shouldn't have to lie about firemen and teachers to get people to support the cause. But they are just clever enough to make actually viable arguments. Now, you also shouldn't lie to the public about fair distribution of affordable housing, but discussion of that is for another time.

A lot of them do want to live here, they just can't afford to. About the only option for a younger officer is taking a discounted unit in Barcroft Apts, and that's just not what many of them want to come home to at night - especially if they're married with kids. That's the hypocrisy of AH in Arlington: it really does nothing for blue collar workers, public servants or teachers. It's almost entirely geared towards recent immigrants and people living in abject poverty. ACAH thinks living in the County is a "right," just not one that teachers or cops should have.
That's simply not true. A newly minted police officer hired by the ACPD makes 53k a year and gets overtime, bilingual pay, and can retire after 25 years. 53k for a single 23 year old is good money, and enough to live in this county. For a single household, that's 70% of area medium income on the first day of your working career. And it does qualify them for rental assistance. But that's only if they don't work any overtime, doing that would prob disqualify them. That's the dirty secret about the AH is these luxury buildings. It's filled by a revolving door of recent college graduates who qualify for a year or two until they get their first raise or job change and salary bump.
Yeah but the pay bumps aren't all that much, and Arlington has instituted stricter controls on overtime - like a lot of other jurisdictions. I stand by my assertion that younger cops and firefighters who are married with a couple kids have a hard time affording a home in the County. And the affordable housing lobby is far more interested in bringing people from outside in, than serving the people who are already here.

I always vote Dem, but I would never vote for anyone from the ACDC. A vote for the ACDC is a vote for unmanaged development.

I have a few blue wave friends without kids in school and I don't think they realize how bad it will be is V loses. They just want all D's, but they don't realize that V is not their enemy.

I have a blue wave friend who DOES have kids in the schools and he is prominently out in support of MdeF. It's very frustrating. I guess if your district is Nottingham, you don't worry too much about what can happen to the schools.

Well, tough shit, I say to them. I've googled APAH leadership, I know where they live and what their homes are worth. They have zero credibility with me when it comes to talking about middle class public servants. I'm almost 40, have two kids, a spouse who works full time, and can't afford more than a duplex in SA. I don't have a right to live here, and I've got to make choices, just like anyone else. This is a great place to be police, whether you live here or not. There are a handful of terrible crimes per year but in terms of officer safety, this is among the best.

Plenty of Nottingham folks support Vihstadt as well, his signs are all over the neighborhood. We're not immune to funding issues either (see the 22-kid class that got moved to a tiny support room inside the building because APS won't pay to repair the trailer after its toilets and a/c broke).
When MdeF went through my neighborhood, I asked him what set him apart from Vihstadt. He couldn't come up with one thing that was compelling b/c Vihstadt isn't the one that needs to be replaced.

I saw MdeF respond to a question by trying to differentiate himself from JV on the basis that JV wanted to do a cost/benefit analysis of such-and-such spending idea. I was like, ... you're on the other side of that idea?
