Just move to Burke already if you think a house on Kalmia needs bars on the windows. Seriously. |
I would never move to Burke. It’s not diverse enough. We are an AA family with young kids. I want to live in DC. But I’m not sure about living close to GA Avenue. |
Georgia Avenue is not scary, especially this far north. Shepherd Park is not Park View. No one has bars on the windows, and you moving to the neighborhood and treating it like you're a "pioneer" moving somewhere scary isn't any less of a shitty attitude just because you're AA. The Gold Coast is not sketchy. Shepherd Park is a very established upper middle class neighborhood, and the fact that you're panicking about being near a busy road means that city living might not be for you. |
Oh please. She has the right to say she isn't sure about living near Georgia Ave., or any other busy street. Most streets are very quiet in the neighborhood, so PP is right to ask questions about the location of this one. PP with young kids, I live in SP currently. Several homes do indeed have bars on windows (usually homes of older folks). However, I might just invest in a good security system and cameras (I believe there's a rebate from the city for this). If you really like that house, I would definitely drive by at night, walk around at 9 or 10pm to get a feel of those blocks, and also on Sunday morning to get a sense of the churchgoer traffic. Talk to neighbors. I know a couple families on that very block who would be happy to talk to you. If you can, I'd even join the listserv and ask neighbors there. It's possible that this house may go under contract in the meantime, but then you'd be poised for the next home listed near Georgia or Eastern in the future. Good luck! I'm also AA with young kids, and it's a wonderful, super friendly neighborhood. We have been here almost five years and love it here. |
Thank you! Your comments were helpful and greatly appreciated. We did drive by at night. It didn’t look too bad. There were homeless people sleeping on church steps around the corner. I feel bad saying it but it made me a bit uncomfortable. But I know it’s probably fine. I would love to talk to neighbors....... I’m already on the listserv...it’s super helpful. |
PP here. Okay, glad you are on the listserv. I understand where you're coming from--I would be a bit uncomfortable too. Good to check things out more. I'll share a couple of anecdotes. In the winters, neighbors on my block have shoveled our sidewalk for us without being asked, and we've done the same for them. Today, my child was playing at the playground with my husband after camp and saw several of her friends there. My husband learned that there were soccer tryouts for a neighborhood-based soccer team going on. There are impromptu playdates after school where kids ride bikes, play in kiddie pools, etc. It is really a slice of (diverse) Americana here. I would just do as much research as possible so there aren't any big surprises. Where do neighbors there park their cars--is it safe to park on Kalmia, or do they park around the corner on 12th? Etc. Also what is the impact of any construction etc. in the next year before the Target opens (I don't think they're supposed to do construction, but I'd double-check). I heard that they're also looking into a coffee shop or fast casual restaurant for the remaining space, which would be nice to have close by and pretty different from the current retail offerings near there. |
PP, please tell me where to find info about the neighborhood soccer tryouts. I haven’t see it mentioned on the listserv. Sorry to hijack! |
Thanks again PP. Yes, I can definitely see that SP is a unique community. We we went to the picnic last Sunday and met some lovely families. We are doing as much research as possible and planning to put an offer in. Would you mind connecting directly ? My email is Shp1913@gmail.com . I would like to try and connect with folks on that block. |
I wish I had more info. From what husband said, this may be a spinoff from a Stoddert league, but more convenient for those that live on this side of the park. He said the coaches may be affiliated with Maret. I'll see if I can find out more. |

Okay! It is definitely special. Sellers told us the same thing when we bought--that SP is a unique community, and the only reason they were selling was because their jobs moved them to another part of the country. I'll send you a message and try to connect you. |

Thank you PP! I look forward to connecting with you. |
Thank you! |
| Has anyone gone to the house on Kalmia and 14? |
I’m going to wait for open house...it’s overpriced. So I’m in no rush. Maybe they’ll find someone to pay 899k but I think it’s too high |
