What is life like inside Buckingham Palace?

Normal people fight over money, family budget, household duties. The royals have none if this to worry about.

So do the young royals get pissy about old fart royalty protocols? Do they argue about who has to do what appearance? Surely there some sort of angst

You are wrong! Of course they argue about these same issues - this was well documented during the time of Diana.

It's still well documented and will be as long as Fergie is alive.

Why do you think she's living back in palace apartments? Out of the goodness of the royal family's hearts? HA! The woman had been a living bad public relations campaign for two decades.

Sorry to the Kate fanatics. She should have hired a better designer.

I’m not a Kate “fan”, I’ve just lived in official/private residences and know that they, more than anyone but the Queen and Charles themselves, do not have the freedom the rest of us have. You’re talking about a young woman who is told that she can only ever paint her nails one color and must always wear pantyhose. Do you really think the red Peter Pan collar post delivery dress spoke to her? She has a very specific image to portray and old, stuffy, British is the goal. Upper class houses often look like this and worn, inherited stuff is common. Old things for old money and they are the epitome of old money.

You are greatly exaggerating the situation. The private residences are rarely ever shown to the public via photos. There are expectations but not to that degree. As the buildings are listed and under historic preservation there's only so much structural alterations they can make, but decor is really up to the person.

Kate herself simply has very restrained and old fashioned taste in clothes. It's deliberate, not enforced on her. She could be more glamorous if she wanted but she has decided not to. Meghan Sussex will be more fashionable than Kate. Both Kate and Pippa seem deliberately focused on evoking a certain kind of interwar 1930s up to 1950s style of decor and clothing of the upper classes of the time. It's not being enforced on either of them, but a desire to "fit in" as much as possible, as both grew up middle class and have climbed their way into the upper classes. The decor and clothing styles we see associated with them is personal preference, not enforced on them.

Buckingham Palace is mostly a series of very formal rooms. The royals detest it and bolt whenever possible for Windsor Castle, also very grand but much more home like, with gardens all round and much more privacy.
