I think people are making a mountain out of a molehill with regards to that statement.

If Spacey has had male and female relationships in his life, he is likely bisexual or at least at some stage in his life felt comfort with bisexuality, which is a confusing and misunderstood place on the human sexuality scale. Eventually he probably came to terms with the fact that he preferred being with men more than with woman, so he chose to live life as a gay man. Yes, that is a choice, the same way some gay men "choose" to live in closet an deny their sexuality while marred to women. He didn't say "being gay is a choice." He just decided that being with men was more fulfilling than women, and for some people, that is a choice.

But that doesn't excuse him trying to seduce a minor.

A bit deranged? It sounds like a fucking House of Horrors! Kevin Spacey never stood a chance to be other than a very damaged man, if the allegations of his childhood are true. And the apple did not fall far from the tree if that is the case. So while I do have empathy for the incredibly abused child and the irreparably damaged man he became, that does not excuse any abuse he may have passed along to others.

Everybody knew he was a pedophile. I heard it from my DS, young teen then, that they have to watch it because he is coming to play at their club! I made sure I was there the whole time. I don't think he is gay or bisexual. He has some kind deformed, reptilian sexuality that is based on domination. I think people are often attracted to aspects that they lack in their own psyche. For Spacey, that may be the innocence of children. Maybe his insane childhood played a role in this.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if the fallout from this is the end of Hollywood. I'm not suggesting that movies and television are going away, but they will be scattered away from the current power centers, into different locales and different business models.

Most abused kids don't go on to abuse others. So as horrible as his upbringing was, it doesn't excuse his actions against a minor.

He denied being gay for years, so this is not about choosing to live as a gay man.

Lastly rape is about power not sex. Straight or gay--it's about power.
