He was forced out. Mandatory evacuation.

Even worse! Why should Rush listen to Big Government trying to protect him from being killed in a Liberal Hoax Storm! He should have defied government orders and stayed put in his house to prove that it's all fake.

I guess I missed him saying that this hurricane was a liberal hoax. Don't tell me, more fake news? Gosh are libs gullible!

“These storms, once they actually hit, are never as strong as they're reported,” Limbaugh claimed on his syndicated radio show. He added that “the graphics have been created to make it look like the ocean's having an exorcism, just getting rid of the devil here in the form of this hurricane, this bright red stuff.”

Why would the media exaggerate the threat of a hurricane? Here's Limbaugh's theory:

There is symbiotic relationship between retailers and local media, and it’s related to money. It revolves around money. You have major, major industries and businesses which prosper during times of crisis and panic, such as a hurricane, which could destroy or greatly damage people’s homes, and it could interrupt the flow of water and electricity. So what happens?

Well, the TV stations begin reporting this and the panic begins to increase. And then people end up going to various stores to stock up on water and whatever they might need for home repairs and batteries and all this that they’re advised to get, and a vicious circle is created. You have these various retail outlets who spend a lot of advertising dollars with the local media.

The local media, in turn, reports in such a way as to create the panic way far out, which sends people into these stores to fill up with water and to fill up with batteries, and it becomes a never-ending repeated cycle. And the two coexist. So the media benefits with the panic with increased eyeballs, and the retailers benefit from the panic with increased sales, and the TV companies benefit because they’re getting advertising dollars from the businesses that are seeing all this attention from customers.

To state the obvious, these are potentially dangerous comments from Limbaugh, who is based in Palm Beach, Fla. He is encouraging listeners who might be in Irma's path not to take seriously the official guidance disseminated through the media.

“I wish that not everything that involved news had become corrupted and politicized, but it just has,” he said.

So he believes that "tv companies," along with companies like Home Depot and Dasani, are manufacturing crises in order to bankroll the public.

Thats interesting because Big Oil is the clear winner when evacuation is issued (gasoline). Batteries and water can be stored anyway for the next storm (Jose or Katia or...) So why didn't he mention those companies?

Did Rush actually say "companies like Home Depot and Dasani"? Because calling Dasani a company is really dumb.

That's what you get out of this? LOL.

Try to keep up, sweetie. This has been all over the news.

I'm well aware of the spin. I listen to him daily. I know what he said and what he meant.

So why is he evacuating then?

Because he didn't say what liberals say he did. Would he be evacuating if he DID? No. he'd be staying put because he believes it's all a liberal hoax.

I know you believe that Trump, Bannon and Gorka used their weather-making machine to create this storm to punish liberals. Go with that. And Russia. Russia helped.

You sound unhinged.

Np. Why do liberals always say 'You sound unhinged' when a conservative calls them out on their shit? I guess they just have nothing else to say but 'You sound unhinged'

It's easier to say that then it is to explain why people can't fill their own containers with their own clean tap water. If Rush truly felt liberals made up the hurricane, he would not be evacuating. The fact he is exposed their lie. Rush simply felt that one can prepare six days out and one can't predict the path of a storm that far out. When the media starts hyperventilating, they stir up a panic and that does benefit retailers. Too many times in the past, the storm has changed track, etc, and people stop listening which creates a worse situation when it IS a huge deal. how many times have DCUMers complained about the same re: snow here?

Nobody believes that you can accurately map out the course of a big storm 5 days before landfall. However, if the weather models tell you there is catastrophic sized storm forming in the Atlantic that likely could hit a major state, what exactly are public officials to do? Plan for the storm? Get evacuation orders in place as the probability of a hit rises? Make recommendations on what you should have on hand? These efforts are not helped by a drug-crazed idiot telling people to ignore all recommendations because "it's liberal spin" (from the republican governor, natch).

This conversation isn't helpful. Anyone have info on the ground if emergency management services have been able to transfer from Miami-Broward to Tampa Bay/Pinellas County?

At times like this everyone also only focuses on state and local fire and police, FEMA and National Guard. What people miss are all of the other emergency support functions, like communications infrastructure, power plants, portable generators, what to do about chemical spills and ruptured oil tanks in hurricanes, all of the other things that make a disaster cascade into worse problems for local communities, and which make response and recovery harder. Yet all of those other agencies are the ones that have been gutted and undermined by Trump and the Republicans. They need to stop playing games to suit their corporate friends who are actually waging war on community safety by deregulating. This is ridiculous.

can you give any specifics on this? Gutted? I didn't think after 8 monhs in office he's even had his fist budget acted on by Congress?

You know I'd rather we err on the side of caution because even a cat 3 or 2 can do a lot of damage. My parents lost power for over a week after hurricane Isabel and we're grateful that they had a generator. People in our hometown lost running water for several day because of damage to a water treatment plant. Even if Irma downgraded or spun out to sea it could still have caused a lot of damage.

Good luck, Florida. Hope the storm is less violent than predicted and your preparations are good enough to get you guys through.

Agreed. Hoping for the best for all Floridians.
And, on another note, Brock Long, is doing a helluva job. I am sure he has been surviving on very little sleep, along with all the other people at FEMA.
They deserve a nice vacation when hurricane season is over.

I think it is sickening that some people believe a hurricane is an opportunity to take advantage of others.
Good news is that most of those looting homes and businesses were arrested.
I hope they get the book thrown at them.
Love the fact that the police were tweeting out pictures of those arrested for looting sitting in a jail cell.

Police in Fort Lauderdale said nine were arrested in connection to a sportswear store burglary. The group, which was filmed by a local news staton, allegedly stole sneakers.

The Miami-Dade Police Department also said on Twitter that there were 28 arrests for looting.

Similar warnings were issued by other police departments across the state. “Any looters who come to Pembroke Pines will be greeted by our officers. Choose wisely and stay home,” wrote the Pembroke Pines Police Department.

The Broward County Sheriff’s Office, meanwhile, wrote: “ATTENTION LOOTERS; Every incident will be investigated. Evidence collected will be used to pursue charges after the fact.”

Consequences matter.
Good for law enforcement doing their job.

EPA for one. Regardless of the Congressional budget, Pruitt's staff have still been moving forward with 30% plus cuts to staffing and budget and are already the smallest they've been since Reagan with more cuts coming. And no sign of them stopping cutting despite the massive cry for EPA's help coming from Texas about all of the petrochemical industry, water treatment plants and other issues affected by Harvey.

This is ridiculous. Congress needs to step in. Pruitt needs to be removed if he doesn't understand his dismantling of EPA is a huge problem and massive public safety risk.
