Mercedes GLE coupe.

I LOVE those but wouldn't consider one on a $275k HHI.

I won't consider it on our $550k income.

Our only debt is mortgage. We pay cash for cars and drive them for 10+ years.

This is us, too. I drive an Audi Q7, but it's a 2007.

My Ford Escape for lasted for 14 years - never needed any major work until the last 1.5 years I had it. Even then, it wasn't anything crazy. Their SUVs are reliable.

Maybe you got lucky. I had 3 Fords and all were terrible, major fall aparst non stop. My Explorer was making tank shifting noises every few feet... My minivan broke down non stop, once in such way that I could only drive in reverse! And a sedan has non stop breaks problems, break pedal problem, all the controls are breaking down all the time, even the door handles broke twice! Not an old car. My mechanic told me they do not recommend that anybody buys a Ford, they see more Fords than any other car. Oh and the passenger side air bag? Randomly comes on and off and Ford told me to gain more weight! Even though my mom was sitting in that seat and she is the woman that loves her food and it shows! Trust me, you got lucky or maybe that model is just better done than the rest or that year was better.

30yo couple with one kid making $275k HHI makes them one-percenters for their demo, no?

I know guys at working making $100k driving pretty flashy cars...

Depends where she works. A young woman driving a luxury car could be tacky...

Big $$$ decisions should be made together. And she should get a say in what she wants.

This.

+1 I'd be pissed. But then, our money are held jointly.

Do you hold the purse strings, OP?

I love the 4 door hard top jeep wrangler! Our other family cars are Lexus SUV, older jeep wrangler and some sports cars. The 4 door Jeep Wranger is my next car.

Cool dude. What nice gesture. Should be good for a few nights at least of some ...

I haven't read all the posts. But assume you have thought through whether you need 3 rows for carpooling and sports. A must.

That said, I reluctantly agree that this could backfire. She may have strong thoughts on what she wants.

I'd get the Porsche Macan. Cute car and not too huge.

OP where are you? I will follow up on Dec 25 to ask what you ended up doing and how much she liked it. I know you are a nice guy and really want to do something nice for your wife.

My husband has purchased several cars as gifts for me. But we also talk about cars all the time when we're driving and I have a very car-centric job. So the gifts for me were things he knew I'd like.

If you really don't know what she wants, surprise her with a trip to the dealer.

And, no, not every dealer will take a car back after a few days. Once it is titled, it is used.

I always hate the commercials this time of year (like the Lexus ones) that show people surprising a spouse with a new car. I've always told my husband that I would be pissed if he made such a large purchase without at least talking to me about it first.

this. Unless the two of you had discussed or she told you what car she wants (which from your thread, doesn't seem so), better avoid. Best talk to her about it, or go test drive some, and then surprise her with what she actually likes.
