I want to surprise my wife with a new SUV...

Gross. I would turn down that ugly oyster shell, as would most people.

And money is probably tight for them. The pleasure of making a higher salary isn't to buy a more expensive car; it's to have money left over in the bank.

This car is soooo ugly. It reminds me of a frog every time I see one.

When I see women driving cars like that I assume they are either sahms or girlfriends/new wives whose bf/new husband wanted to show off. As a highly successful woman, that's not the look I'm going for. I work too hard for my money, and therefore know how hard my husband works too, that I couldn't imagine wasting it on something like that when a $25k car does the exact same thing.

I'd be pissed if DH brought home a minivan. While I'd appreciate the surprise SUV, I'd still prefer to have input as to the model, color, etc.

+1 he could bring home the car of my dreams and I would tell him to take it back and eat the cost, just because he didn't bother to consult me.

Alternatively, I would surprise him by tossing all his clothes and shoes and replacing them when I think he should be wearing -- regardless of the cost or his personal taste.

Driving a nice car is a great feeling. Every single day. Bolsters my confidence, it's cozy, it puts a smile on my face. Once you drive a nice car it's impossible to go back. Why work hard if you can't enjoy it once in a while. Many people get car allowances here, an $800-1000 per month lease is casual here.

Mercedes GLE coupe.

I LOVE those but wouldn't consider one on a $275k HHI.

I won't consider it on our $550k income.

Our only debt is mortgage. We pay cash for cars and drive them for 10+ years.

This is us, too. I drive an Audi Q7, but it's a 2007.

I wouldn't drive this, but not because I don't love it. It's a robbery/burglar magnet.

I actually think that car is kind of ugly.

My Ford Escape for lasted for 14 years - never needed any major work until the last 1.5 years I had it. Even then, it wasn't anything crazy. Their SUVs are reliable.

What a cute anecdote. The joke about Fords, from mechanics: Ford found a problem and they circled it.[/quote

My cousin is a mechanic & says that it's well known in his industry that Ford should be an acronym for "Found On Road Dead".

Interesting. I'm what I believe you would call a "highly successful" woman and I'd drive it (except I bought a new car just before it came out). I spend enough time in the car that I want a nice one. I have no desire to drive a $25K car. I would if I couldn't afford something nice, but I can so I do. And BTW, a $25K car does not do "the exact same thing." If you like to drive, you will know the difference.
