My daughter plays one of the sports you mention and her boyfriend plays another one. The idea that athletes at Kenyon are BMOC/BWOC is flat-out wrong. In fact, the large number of student-athletes at Kenyon works against this. The same is true at most SLACs, including the one I attended and the one DH attended. With a smaller student body, you have fewer cliques, and are more likely to get to know students who are doing lots of different things on campus. My daughter's friends include students with a broad range of interests and talents -- they're athletes, writers, pre-med students, political types, musicians, dancers, econ majors . . . . etc. The one unifying factor seems to be that they love Kenyon -- as do all the Kenyon alums I've met. |
| So is the Kenyon vibe more like the NESCAC SLACS or the midwestern SLACS like Grinnell, Carleton, St Olaf? |
Kenyon is such a special place. When do you find out? Good luck! |
Not as preppy as Amherst, Middlebury and Bowdoin . . . not as crunchy as Wesleyan, Grinnell and Oberlin . . . it's the just-right SLAC.
Also, excellent teaching, a pretty campus, great athletic facilities, and a beautiful new library about to open. There's a lot to like at Kenyon. |
| So maybe like a midwestern version of Occidental? |
Yes, but Kenyon is more of a walled garden, given location. |
Thank you! I think we find out in mid-December but I’m not sure if they’ve announced a decision date. |
| Building wise, whether it's the new library, home style "dorms" or the state of the art athletic facilities, it's as good as it gets for a LAC. But it's one thing to be in the middle of nowhere in MA or Maine or CT. It's another thing entirely in OH. |
| Kenyon is lovely. Some of you are nuts. |
Sorry --- that's just East Coast snobbery. I know it when I see it because I grew up in CT and went to Middlebury. The beauty of a "middle of nowhere" SLAC is that the students learn they can survive without fabulous shopping, restaurants, etc. I've always lived in cities or close-in suburbs except for those 4 years, but the experience instilled in me a respect for small town life and the people who choose it. That's true whether you're talking about New England or the Midwest. |
Nice post and perspective. |
| I really wish they would initiate a real computer science program. Not sure why they've limited themselves to the scientific computing concentration. Too expensive i would imagine?? |
| When you visit Kenyon, where do you stay? I was told Columbus? Isn't that like an hour away? |
Holiday Inn Express in Mt Vernon is 5 minutes from campus. They've done a great job with Covid precautions. |
Thank you. Lovely post. |
