Police Arrest Teenager with Food on Metro

Are the gonzaga boys white?

PP here . . .uh, I already answered this question but to clarify: some of them are. But I've seen well-behaved Gonzaga kids of all races on the metro from Silver Spring.

Now if they could only put forth that effort to catch those pesky rapists...

Also, I'd pay good money to see one of these cops tell the guy I ride Metro with every morning to toss his Starbucks coffee and muffin. This guy is a massive, massive ex-linebacker dude who always has his Venti NFSVL and muffin each morning. Or better yet, tell any business person, regardless of color, to toss their morning coffee and breakfast.

IDGAF if it's the "law" or not. I've been stuck on those trains too many times not to have an emergency bottle of water and food in my bag. Also, I never think twice about eating or drinking on the train. If a cop told me to throw my stuff away, I'd probably laugh in his face and get arrested. Like for real? How about you go look for the real criminals... the rapists, those attacking people for no reason, the thugs who hang out at the fare machines to grab money and run, etc. Food crumbs on those POS trains is the least of their worries. Did they even have one line that ran smoothly every morning last week or this week?

DC's new head guy seems great. Now he needs to bring in some help from NYC and Chicago to teach these idiots how to run a mass transportation system. First rule... don't buy trains with GD carpet!

You are an idiot. Read the article before you comment!!! She was taken off to the side because SHE JUMPED THE TURNSTILE!! Then they asked her to get rid of the food. NO! We need to see your student ID? NO! Not only did commit two crimes, she was cursing, resisting and not complying. She had very right to get arrested. Do you believe every teen should just be allowed to steal and wreak havoc. Security and police should only look for rapists? What if they stole your phone or purse? Hmm, not a big enough crime, right?

Um, no. I did read the article and she did not jump the turnstile. She was standing on the paid side, which is where it becomes illegal to have food & drink.

And I did say that the police need to focus on the more important crimes like assault and robbery. I've seen two separate attacks where tourists had their cash they were going to feed into the fare machines grabbed by people who then ran. One time a police officer was standing right there and looked the other way! Why? Because he weighed about 250 pounds and there was no way in hell his fat a$$ was catching up to the guy running away with a wad of cash. The other incident involved a homeless man who grabbed a woman's money, growled at her, and walked away. A man alerted a metro employee who specifically said it was against policy for him to intervene in any incidents like that. No one's cell was working so the lady asked him to call the police. He said he would but that it meant she had to stand and wait and they were going to make that a low priority call because "it's just $20, lady."

But lord Jesus, you got a teen resisting arrest for eating chips and you get the cavalry there ASAP.

"Unlawful entry" doesn't necessarily mean she jumped the turnstile. It can also mean that she refused to leave the station after being ordered to when she refused to put her food away. I think the police were within their rights to arrest her for that, but I don't think the case called for any use of physical force. Who cares if she's sitting down or not? She was asked to put the food away, she refused; she was then asked to leave, she didn't. I think the cops were pissed that she was giving them attitude, but you know? Too bad. You don't get to drop people to the ground because they gave you lip. So I think she was wrong, and I think the cops overreacted a little.

You really like saying Jesus. I think that girl needs him more. She was nasty, rude, and disobeyed everything that was asked of her. Yet, here you are sticking up for her. She was arrested for unlawful ENTRY and yes, she went thru the turnstile with another person sharing one metro card. That is why the police went up to her. Her eating chips and lollipop was just one more infraction. But she didn't care. She didn't care at all. Not when there is someone taping it and she can try and sue. Why? Because people like you who stick up for her. She broke a law, broke a rule, disobeyed police orders, and refused to show ID. She also made a scene and cursed like a sailor. But yes, sure - stick up for her. Just another sweet innocent girl in the wrong place at the wrong time with the terrible mean cops.

Excessive force???? Sweeping her legs and holding her to the ground so she would sit still? That is not excessive force. If my daughter acted like that towards police, I would hope they would have her face planted in the concrete while handcuffing her. I teach my kids to respect authority and would gladly back them up. What would you do if you were that child's mom? My guess is go on TV and complain and then try and sue the police department. Further showing this entitled self-centered girl that she does not have to listen to anyone.

This sticking up for the girl reminds me of this news story.

Remember when the homeowner in Miami put surveilance on her home because she was robbed multiple times and feared for her life. She also got a licenses and carries a gun for protection. Well a 17yr old came in to rob her in the middle of the night and she shot him. He died. In this news cast the family says, he was so nice, loved education, blah blah blah. Then they say you don't understand what it is like to live in the hood. How he gonna get money for clothes?"

WTH? So we are supposed to allow kids to not pay for Metro or give them the OK to rob other people's money because they are black? I mean their upbringing and thought process is unbelievable. To think they actually said that on a tv news station. That woman should have let strangers come into her house at night and rob her, possibly killing her - because they need money for clothes.

I am so done with defense rationalizations for criminals because they are black.

Are you a military parent, or raised by one? No disrespect. I just have a different mentality and wonder if this is kind of thinking is more in line with military culture.

Not the PP. But I agree. If my child acts like a shit I would appreciate it if a person in authority put her in her place. The officer was not violent, just authorative. The kid did not need to refuse simple requests- he was neither threatening nor agressive.

I showed the video to my daughter and I asked her what she thought and what she would do. She did not understand why the girl refused the requests and was using fowl language directed at a police officer. My daughter did not understand either why the girl did not put away her food - as my 12 year old rides the metro and understands it's against the rules.

Perhaps at the base of this is parentd that teach their kids respects are the ones that appreciate it when this value is inflrcex by teachers, police officers, etc

I am the PP and no, we have no military in the house or extended family. I have never hit my kids either, nor has my husband. But then again, my teens and preteens don't act like this. If they did, I am fine with the police forcing them to sit, in a police car, etc... It is not excessive force.

I am so glad to see Metro police enforcing the law at least once in a while. They seldom seem to. Every night on the train, I see eating whole takeout dinners, often leaving their garbage behind. Two days ago I watched as one mother fed her kids fried chicken which they dropped on the train floor. Gentle reminders about no eating/drinking can be met with a string of f-bombs. Moreover, the whole fiction that people can carry coffee cups and other beverages onto trains as long as they don't sip them is ridiculous. Who is going to buy a Starbucks coffee, only to wait to drink it cold after a 30 minute train ride. The problem with coffee cups is that I've seen passengers drop them, splattering hot coffee all over trains, stations and sometimes other riders. It's not like Metro has more cleaning staff than 10 years ago -- more like the opposite. Better enforcement of the no eating and drinking law would be mean cleaner, more sanitary and safer rides.
