Attorney General Wins $539,000 Judgment against Couple for Fraudulently Enrolling Children in DCPS

I get what they did was illegal, but if it was truly about cops/commute, wouldn't it make sense for DC to have a program for law enforcement/fire department to be able to place theirkids in schools close to their precincts, perhaps for a small "tuition" fee? DC really needs good cops and fire/rescue workers. Their kids are likely the tyoe of students who would be assets to this failing school system, as would having law enforcement officers who were personally invested in the local schools being safe and effective due to their own kids attending the schools.

I still thik tripling the fine is ridiculous given the victimless nature of the crime.

I agree with all of this, and do think police officers and fire/rescue workers should have special consideration for attending schools near work. And although I don't agree it's a victimless crime (overcrowded classrooms are a real problem that directly affect properly enrolled students and their parents), I too think triple damages is harsh.

Do you really think this is justified whether they work for the MPD and they should be given a right to work closer to their job or precinct? I absolutely DISAGREE!!!! Than in that case if they are given a "right" to put their children in the schools that are closer to their job than how about this for an example if I worked at Georgetown University Hospital what than would be my child school if you are going to give them priority than you need to give it to the nurses that will be taking care of the people that they are bringing to the hospital right? and not just that do you know if that was the case could you imagine how many people would choose a job to get that preference too? That sounds ridiculous they had enough money to pay for tuition or even just send your child to their Maryland or Virginia schools or is it because the times don't work for them well welcome to the family of millions of single parents you make it work or change and alter your schedule as you see fit. I can only imagine what else they were getting free or discounted probably even before and aftercare the list can go on and on. I have no pity for them. Crooked cops just as well.

I wonder if the MPD officers claimed residency preference on their job applications? There's a lot of value in that, in getting hired in the first place:

"An applicant for District of Columbia government employment in the Career Service (or as an attorney in the Excepted Service) who is a bona fide resident of the District at the time of application may claim a hiring preference over a non-resident applicant. Residency preference is to be claimed by completing Form DC2000RP and submitting it with the employment application.

Residency preference will be afforded as follows: ten points will be added to the rating and ranking score of each qualified applicant who claims a hiring preference upon application for employment in the Career Service. A person who claims a residency preference and is selected for the position must agree in writing no later than the date of appointment to maintain residency for a period of seven consecutive years from the effective date of his or her appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency will result in forfeiture of employment. Residency preference may be requested when competing for promotions and vacancies in the Department for specialized uniform positions."

Cheaters gonna cheat.

While my paystub does show DC taxes withheld, it doesn't show my address. This can be a problem if you are claiming IB preference. I work for the fedgov if that matters.

Did you see the "for all DC employees" part?

The parents are police officers and the kids attended Eaton, Deal, and Wilson which were all convenient to their work places.

Shocked, shocked that there has been any residency fraud going on at Eaton, Deal and Wilson.

Why is this a "victimless" crime?

Indeed. Two entire DCPS schools last year were kicked out of the Deal feeder pattern because of cited overcrowding at Deal. It's aggravating to realize that some of that 'overcrowding' is due to students whose parents commit residency fraud.

It is ironic, and most recent MPD hires have been quality officers. But if you go back to the bad old Barry administrations, a lot of the cops hired then failed the police exam multiple times and some even had criminal histories themselves. Fortunately, a lot of hires from that era have retired or been purged from the force by now.

True, but the culture of corruption lives on. It's going to take a couple generations of gentrification - new people with high levels of education and expectations - to purge the city of built-in graft.

Agree with PP. it is frustrating to me how many posters want to excuse them too.

Oddly enough, there are quite a few residency cheaters at low performing schools as well.

I taught at one of the worst performing high schools in DCPS last year. I knew of at least ten kids who came in from Maryland everyday. Their parents went to the school, so they wanted their kids to go there.

If they own a multi family apartment building their assets are going to exceed their debts.

Great! Let's liquidate. How fast do you think we can ruin them?

That's not going to happen. These people were ballsy enough to go all the way through the end of the trial. And their comment to the Wash Post was "things aren't black and white" They are going to appeal and this will be tied up for a long time. And being that this is DC, nothing will happen to them at work either...

Appeals generally don't take that long and cost money.

Probably more for the DCPS free and conveniently located before-and after- care than for academic strength.

But in another sense, many cheaters do try to make "black or white" the issue. It's called deflection.

Aren't those schools just middling to average when you compare them to Arlington, fcps & montgomery county schools?

I disagree. DC Taxpayers are all victims! These were two police officers who are sworn to uphold the laws.
