However, I think the main reason men find southern women attractive is because we don't walk around trying to be men. We can be educated, smart and successful without trying to act like we have a penis.

Southern women have a softness that northerners just don't have. Even our accent is soft and feminine. Hearing DC women speak is like nails on a chalkboard to my husband - just too fast, too loud, and too aggressive. You can be respected in the workplace an still act like a lady.

Want to be more southern? Dress nicely. Do your hair and make up. Speak softly. Never curse around anyone but your closest friends. Don't get offended when a man holds open the door or offers his seat. If you weren't raised to behave like a lady, learn what that means.

Ugh good god No. On average, women in southern California are much hotter. And they don't dress like 8 year olds.

Southern women are caricatures.

Can we all agree on this: The looks of the median lady in both South California and the South are way better than here in DC.

Definitely not. Please google obesity rates in the southern states and compare those to DC. Southern California...I can concede that

That is insane unless you consider your body your only/most important asset.

THIS.

I couldn't agree more. For many of these women, their looks/bodies are their ONLY assets. Yuck.

And I hate that fake preppy / Lilly Pulitzer / Vineyard Vines look. It's so infantile, useless, and unattractive.

The unfortunate truth is that women are often judged entirely on their looks and acting "nice." Southern women understand this. you can refuse to admit this but you're not doing yourself any favors.

We aren't talking about the looks of poor southerners though. Poverty and obesity go hand in hand. We are talking about middle and upper class college educated southern women.

The truth is if you buy into that, you're going to hit the glass ceiling about 5 years in

Not a pretty one in the bunch.

It's not about being "pretty" it's about looking and acting a certain way. I did not belong to an SEC sorority, but they have certain "looks" they are going for.

If you want to see real Southern looks, turn on the USA Channel right now. They are running a marathon of Chrisley Knows Best. You will learn it all.

That's heaven, compared to ten random gals you'd find in the street here.

My twenty three year old younger sister is friends with this "southern belle" and watching her is like a revelation on how to be beautiful or feminine.

Get this; this girl is only 23 but she is just so...self aware and so sure of herself and her womanly wiles. She is petite, has bleach blonde curly hair, wears bright colors and always has her nails and toes done. She also always wears a full face of makeup and is so naturally feminine. The way she flirts with guys and walks and talks. Its SO new and strange to me.

Wish I knew how to do that!

Considering this is true ...

What is to stop you OP? Stop dressing in a way that you feel is frumpy. Wear bright colors. Do your hair. Get a mani/pedi if you want. Take a chance and make a change. Its not rocket surgery really.

Oh I'm laughing so hard...Rocket surgery.... Love you pp!!!!

Depends on how many poor people there are, and their looks, that would reach the Median or not.

I hope that doesn't happen to me. I don't know what you mean by "buy into it." I've tried my best to look good and will continue to do so. However I'd be an idiot if I thought there isn't a glass ceiling or that hard work will help me break through it.

I had the impression she was referring to college educated women in DC.
