Wow--your retorts are so...stinging!

Wow--your ire is so... awkward!

Lol!

NP here. This is the saddest thing I've ever seen.

Then you have lived a VERY sheltered life.

I think some of the PPs were genuinely surprised that the FARMs rate is as high as it is.

It's not really surprising, nor will it be surprising when it goes down. I believe DCB is the largest source of kids right now. MV is not there at all.

DCB and Stokes have high FARMs numbers. YY's are low, but were higher in the initial classes and those kids are now at DCI. Also those initial YY classes (now at DCI, mostly) were small, like 18-30 kids, total. They had combined classes for the leading grade for a while. Stokes moved to Brookland in 2008 and that is when it first got some mention on this board, as Brookland parents got interested. Its FARM numbers are much lower in the lower grades. And YY has huge numbers in the 4th and below, 4 classes per grade in most cases, with 6 classes in the current 3rd grade.

So, it stands to reason --because Stokes FARM % is going down in younger grades, because MV will start to send, and because YY younger grades are big and low FARM, that FARM rate will go down at DCI.

I know less about DCB and LAMB, but these schools are older and I would think they would have more stable FARM rates from year to year. MV too as it was 'hot' from the beginning.

We'll see. However, right now the FARMS rate is 52%.

Yes, and the kids are doing great. Go figure.

Really? I recently spoke with a DCI parent who told me that bullying and fistfights are very common at the school. My children don't and won't attend DCI, so I have no dog in this fight. However, I'm sure there's a connection between the fighting and large population of students who come from poor (and likely unstable homes).

I spoke with a DCI parent tonight who is happy with the school. Didn't hear about any fighting.

She probably didn't know about DCI's 52% FARMS rate either. There are lots of things that occur during the school day that parents know nothing about.

FARMS doesn't equal fighting or bad kids, especially at immersion schools. The weird DCI hater is not a feeder parent, or she'd know how devoted of a parent you have to be to send your kid to a DCI feeder. A lot of the FARMS kids are Central American refugees who were middle class or better back home but ended up poor here in DC. They may be poor but are not uneducated. If they were uneducated they could just dump their kid at the local school. But it takes effort to go to DC bilingual or stokes. It takes effort and pride in your heritage to keep them in a school to maintain their language.

So DCI hater, being poor doesn't mean you'll automatically be a bad kid. Educate yourself a little.

Stating facts doesn't make one a DCI hater. The FARMS rate is what it is. The fights are a fact, not my imagination. Educate yourself first.

Middle school kids fighting? Well that never happens in low Farms schools, ever.

Hi, parent who reported fighting among students. How often does this occur and what happens the students involved in the fighting? Are the fights related to gang activity?

I have not heard about any fighting. Sorry but your "facts" are questionable at best, particularly since you don't and won't send your kids there.

I have no dog in this fight either, but my friend told me there are some unstable people in this world who love to post lies on the Internet.

The parent who "reported" fighting among students doesn't send their kids there. Presumably like any school there is fighting, but I have not heard of any at all. And the question about gang activity is insane. These kids are too busy with school and learning their second or third language. Give me a break.

My son goes there and there have been zero reports of fist fights. Like any school there are likely going to be altercations, but I take issue with someone who doesn't have any actual information characterizing the school and the kids as a bunch of fist fighters.

Anonymous wrote:Why are you talking about WIS? I'm mean, yes, it's awesome that a charter as new as DCI is being compared to the most expensive private school in DC, but still. This is irrelevant.

You should read the thread before asking silly questions. Do you honestly think that someone just started to post about WIS without any context?

Btw, I'm sure that DCI is also flattered to be mentioned in the same sentence as WIS. However, the reason it's being mentioned is not a compliment to DCI. WIS isn't just an expensive school, it's far superior on just about every objective measure to DCI (and I have no doubt that will remain the case). The best that DCI can hope for is to be considered the poor person's alternative to WIS.

So those of us who can't afford 37k in tuition are "poor?"

Apparently so. I never understand why some people go on this thread specifically to make people feel bad. I am sure many people would prefer to send their kids to WIS instead of DCI or Sidwell over Wilson. But frankly that's not in the cards for us. Good for you for being able to afford one of the most expensive private schools in the world. I'm super happy DCI exists, even if it doesn't have the amenities of WiS.

Why are we even talking about WIS?

(Sorry, I'm late to the party)

This thread is about DCI, and I believe it's great folks will have that option. Let's see if DCPS wakes up and delivers a great and bilingual/ multilingual High School...isn't something supposed to happen at Roosevelt?

No, Roosevelt is supposed to be " international" but not IB or anything academically challenging. Instead, it will have a culinary focus.

Perfect for anyone who aspires to work in a restaurant or hotel kitchen.
