| I really think this needs more publicity. FCPS creates a new center at Lemon Road which is smaller and more manageable than the overcrowded one this school was originally given as a center and then allows this principal to start a LLIV program when there's never been one before the same year and then ok's a class of 13 AAP students? What region is this? Is the regional director aware of this? |
| 13 students is less than any other class in the entire district save maybe one or two. I'm just so disgusted. I hope it isn't true that a principal would get away with this. |
The reported average class size at Shrevewood was slightly over 24 students this year, so if they have AAP classes with 13 or 14 kids someone else there is making up the difference. |
|
Yep - she promised them a small class size and that she would not "principal place" any students. Kind of shady, frankly. But the present 4th grade parents were very insistent about that ....if they were to keep their children there, there would be no mingling.
The 4th grade class is now a little bigger because kids tested in over the summer - parents realized that the AAP kids were getting more than their kids were. |

I can't believe this Shrevewood parent actually thinks it's a plus that this principal is skewing class sizes for general ed to make a sole AAP class. According to the data from class size counts on Sept class sizes, the principal made two combination classes in K, 1, and 2 to give more teachers to 3rd and 4th so that the AAP classes would not be combined with general ed. Another kindergarten class is listed at 31 students with 4 special ed students in it. I can't believe FCPS allowed this. Where is the region 2 administration and school board member to weigh in on this? The reason Shrevewood was given extra teachers compared to a Mclean school was for their FARM and ESOL students. I can't believe most of those are in AAP and if they are, they shouldn't need extra teachers. Why are the 3rd grade students not even reported as AAP students? I bet A Vela is the 3rd grade AAP teacher. I can't get the data to appear in columns, but below is the information.

The big question is WHY IS FCPS ALLOWING THIS??? |
It's true! |
Shrevewood's local level IV only goes up to 4th grade. They keep adding AAP as needed. Regardless -- AAP services are sub par at best despite instruction by "certified" teachers. Same goes for LR. These kids aren't taught grammar and as a result, produce abysmally incoherent prose that is proudly displayed along school hallways. |
| Well apparently Haycock is no better if you read the grammar post in the VA section on dcum. I think writing is a weak spot in many FCPS schools or even most of them. |
Has anyone reported this? What do these people think if the class size distribution? Aren't they supposed to be overseeing this stuff? http://www.fcps.edu/regions/r2/ http://www.fcps.edu/schlbd/members/providence.shtml |
How/where did you get this info? Curious as there are other schools in FCPS that may do this as well. Based on the AAPAC report, these schools would also be potential candidates (more than 10, less than 20 LLIV kids in one grade): Aldrin Beech Tree Camelot Centreville Columbia Dranesville Fairhill Flint Hill Freedom Hill Glen Forest Great Falls Lees Corner Mason Crest Oakview Powell Wakefield Forest Waynewood Westlawn |
|
The excel file can be downloaded here. I'm still in shock that a school would do this.

Phyllis Pajardo is also deeply involved in class sizes. How did this not come up during this year's class size discussions?

Can you add the schools that have less than 25 children? I think 20-25 should be included especially when next year FCPS has so graciously given us one assistant over all classes in one grade for any class between 30-36 students. So glad to hear my child could be in a class of 35 with an assistant for about 2 hours out of the day while Shrevewood AAP kids get 14 kids to a class. |
| FYI -- Beech Tree, Glen Forest, Mason Crest, and Westlawn are Title I schools. |
