| I am an EOTP parent who supports the right of any WOTP family to send their kids to a charter or any other school, but posts like the one from the Janney poster above are why Janney parents have such a bad reputation. |
| Why is such a matter of intense interest and debate that people who can afford to live in-bounds for JKLM also enjoy better options for school, whether it's opting for in bounds, charter, or private? Having more money often means more options, and in more ways than just the schools you get to go to. In school a law professor of mine had to remind our class of this once when we thought we had discovered some new injustice in the fact that a criminal defendant, while entitled to a lawyer by the constitution, still doesn't get access to the same lawyer that a rich defendant can get. People with more money or who live in nice areas almost always have options that are not available to others. It just seems odd to complain about something as self-evident as that. And I say this as someone who leaves EOTP. If I lived WOTP, I'd have no qualms about going with a charter that met my child's needs better, whether it's Bridges for special needs children, or LAMB for bilingual immerson. |
+1 . For Pete's sake, people. Charters are designed to serve the whole city. This kind of nonsense is going to give fuel to the people agitating for neighborhood proximity for charters, and then you'll find yourselves with even fewer options. (NP here, also well EOTP.) |
Yes dear. You've been saying that for a while now. We know your child attends the sought out charter which is the point of this whole thread. You know why my opinion matters? Because nothing is set in stone. Policies change, opinions change based on the newest data and the OPINIONS of taxpayers. So you are fine for now, but the fact that you seem to be taking that for granted just makes you look stupid AND selfish. But go on. Please. |
Not PP you are responding to (who is obviously a moron), but I really don't think that the council is going to pass a law to say that those who live WOTP can't go to city-wide schools. |
Oh I don't think so either but I got tired of her telling me how my opinion doesn't matter. Just because she doesn't agree doesn't mean it doesn't matter. I don't agree with half of what other people vote for in this city, but their votes matter. |
| Team IB for Janney going to charters here. The poster who is trying to claim this is a moral argument sounds batshit insane to me. |
Thank you team IB for Janney. How totally unexpected of you to think that. |
Yeah, I really hope that she is not emblematic of other Janney parents. |
| If an IB child goes to a charter from WOTP school, then there is room at the WOTP school for OOB attendance. Win-win. |
Nope, your opinion still doesn't matter. I'm not worried at all about "policies" changing that will affect our access to Janney, or the charter my child currently attends. If you think that my child's great educational options make me look stupid and selfish, then I'll take it! Your weak insults just make you sound angry and bitter.

IB for Lafayette going to LAMB. Prefer bilingual Montessori although Lafayette is a great school.
A few key points that I feel have been missed in this discussion so far: 1) Charters offer some things that JKLMs do not offer even if the quality of education is more or less the same. For some, it is help for SNs, for others it is immersion, for others it is a specific teaching model. Since there are not charters offering these options that serve Upper NW, Upper NW residents should be free to lottery for the charters just like everyone else. 2) You don't have to have more money to live in Upper NW and have access IBs to JKLM. You just have to be willing to: a) have less space; and/or b) have fewer kids. This is not universally true but I doubt that there are many people reading this thread that could not afford to rent a small apartment in-bounds for a JKLM. You just don't want to make that sacrifice. Don't be so angry at those of us who are willing to do so and don't deny us access to immersion or SN programs that you can lottery into. You make your choices, we make ours. I love it that LAMB kids come from all over the city, including some Ward 3 SFHs. It is true SES and racial diversity. Signed, Conn Ave Apartment Dweller P.S. I will not check this thread again. Go ahead and flame away! |
I'm not IB for Janney. Live EOTP and and desperate to get my kids into a charter. |
+1 all true. Some folks would rather have a nice BBQ in the back yard but make their kids suffer through a crappy local school and/or commute, than personally sacrifice their middle age years in a small-ish condo surrounded by (aagh!) upper NW types of humans. |
| LOVE YOU Conn Ave APT dweller. We, too, are Conn Ave Apt people, and it is frustrating when people EOTP say that they are entitled to charter schools but WOTP people are not. I live here because it was significantly cheaper than many parts of the city, including the many of the EOTP house and condo options in more interesting and vibrant parts of the city. We all make our choices, but it is not fair to presume that IB JKLM means you are wealthy. |
