Or the great migration westward to get out of the mid western dust bowl. Just a couple generations ago. Good points on open jobs. Hence having confidence that when they kick out the immigrants there will be Americans willing to work in these jobs. |
| It's horrible -- terrible poverty. I watched a documentary once where mothers were filling bottles with soda for their babies. |
Epi-pens. |
Been to West Virginia countless times, had a wonderful time. I probably would not lug around my Louis Vuitton, but thats called human decency, not flaunting material wealth when others are going through a hard time. It's interesting that West Virginia has some of the highest poverty rates in the country and some of the lowest crime rates. Some of the best people live there. Truly salt of the earth, wonderful individuals. |
Since when is being on the dole "salt of the earth"? I consider people who find ways to work for a living and have some integrity as "salt of the earth". I'm sure there are some of them in WV, but if 75% of them are on the dole in some way, I wouldn't consider most of them "salt of the earth". |
According to the Cambridge dictionary: "If you say that someone is the salt of the earth, you mean that they are a very good and honest person." Stated directly after mentioning the incredibly low crime rate, I should think it would be obvious to anyone with even the most tenuous grasp of the English language how it applies. |
how "good" are they if they aren't willing to figure out how to earn an honest living. |
I hate to tell you, but the phrase "salt of the earth" has nothing to do with earnings or career. You really need to work on your vocabulary. |
| There are other types of statistics showing that other states are struggling with welfare recipients, too. California has nearly 1/3 of the United States' single-parent welfare families. |
Forget the war on coal. It is too expensive to mine there. The Powder River Basin killed West Virginia coal. |
That number you quoted is wrong. |
NP. I'm wondering about this. Can anyone explain? It has been drilled into me that crime is a direct result of poverty and lack of opportunity. I'm honestly curious - no race baiting, please. |
Sounds a lot like SE DC. Why don't we start fixing things at home, and we simply cut all welfare here? That will teach a lesson to those West Virginians. |
Drilled into you, by whom? Now you know: they lie. Look for new people to hang out with. |
