But but but....for many years I've tried to defend it and have finally made peace with the fact that the stereotypes and negative impressions are mostly true. MTV's Buckwild was the last straw for me.

I'm in an interacial marriage. I would love to visit WV as I've heard some parts are truly beautiful, but I fear going there with my family.

*sigh* WV is not a racist place. There are lots of AAs, Hispanics and even Asians in WV.

So, if we went to the Appalachia we wouldn't get stared at, have racist comments thrown at us?

White (non racist) person here: I wouldn't travel to WV if I were not white. They are very racist still. I hear racist phrases all the time that I've never heard in VA/DC.

I'm from WV and grew up in WV. Some of the most racist slang terms I heard weren't until i moved out of WV when I was 24 yo and they were coming from my Pittsburgh boyfriend.

Then again, you were the type to date said boyfriend.

Some WVians equate classy and dignified to someone who has posed for public nude photos

I think I read somewhere that WV offers free college tuition to their residents if they have good grades or something.

And still, so many there don't go to college.

The state needs to attract more businesses, and one way to do that is to have an educated populace.

hmmm... not really working unfortunately. But I am sure after Ryan cuts all the welfare programs, they will feel compelled to pull themselves up.

No, it's not a joke. It's the sad reality for many towns across the U.S. who have lost their industry.

It was Trump's best state I believe.

Over the past 2 decades, WV has moved dramatically to the right.

I wonder if many of the old moderate Rs in NOVA headed to WV when things got too liberal.

NP. Pretty sure it's part of PA, actually.

West Virginia (and a large chunk of Eastern Kentucky) should just be made into a national park. No jobs, there's never going to be jobs. You have to force people to move. Destitute people aren't going to move if they collect enough to live via welfare.

Define "lots."

As of 2010, .67% of the population of WV was Asian. 3.41% African American.

I am middle eastern and I grew up in the northern panhandle.

People are very polite and friendly, cost of living is low, and the drivers are extremely polite.

But they are very racist and bigoted and ignorant when you get up close.

Both the good and bad are true. I would never be afraid to visit anywhere in West Virginia.

Many of the red states are actually welfare states where they get more federal support than what they contribute in taxes. Money comes from the blue states. I hope that Trump turns of that spigot. Ohhhh. The irony

Why don't these unemployed people move to where there are farm jobs? I'm totally serious. It pays about $10/hr. NC has been asking for unemployed American citizens to work their farms, but only something like 2 or 3 ever show up to work.

I bet most of their ancestors moved to find jobs, clear across the Atlantic ocean. Why can't they move a few states away for jobs? Isn't it better than being on the dole? The kids can get a better education, and then do better for themselves when they are older.

Lots of immigrants today do this, too, and most don't even speak English.
