So, as an interracial couple/family, we wouldn't get rude stares/comments there? |
Oh, no one was rude at all. Very nice in fact! We were just not from there and that's noticeable in small towns. |
PP here from West Virginia. Three of my (very small) high school classmates are in interracial marriages. It's fine. No one I know would be rude to you. If some jerk is openly rude to you, other people will very likely stand up for you. We don't care for that nonsense in West Virginia. but there are a few bigots there still, I am sure, just like there are everywhere. If you run into one, it isn't being a West Virginian that ruined him. he'd be an asshole anywhere. |

Oh, you gotta watch The Wild & Wonderful Whites of West Virginia, it will blow your DCUM mind. (The Whites refer to a family)
"I'm the sexy one of the family."
|
What blows my mind is that someone thinks reality television is a good way to learn about West Virginia. They don't make money by filming normal people. |
| That is like saying DC is like the Real Housewives version. |

Lived in WV for a short period a few years ago. I think the most of the stereotypes are true. People there are largely uneducated/ignorant (but not all of them are rude) and places look like dump. A new theater built was advertised like a Disney theme park came to town. Pathetic!
There is no way in hell I would raise my kids in that kind of environment. |

WV has been a reliably Democrat state for decades. WV was one of only a handful of states captured by Jimmy Carter in 1980. They are that loyal to the Dem party. |
Their state Democrat politicians are not like your standard Democrats. http://fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/07/03/in-west-virginia-coal-means-more-party-less/?_r=0 "The more fundamental answer, however, is that Democratic candidates in West Virginia often bear little resemblance to national Democrats. State Democrats tend to be more conservative on a range of issues. Moreover, they emphasize their independence from the national party.. West Virginia is 94 percent white and rural. There just aren’t that many liberal or progressive voters in West Virginia. In 2008, 48 percent of voters were Democrats, but just 18 percent of voters described themselves as liberal, according to exit polls." |
You do realize WV went to Kerry in the election? |
|
I Googled WV welfare and came up with numbers like 18% below poverty level and 20% on food stamps. I would really like to see where the 75% figure came from.
As far as WV being reliably Dem, that's a thing of the past. Joe Manchin is probably the last Dem Senator you'll see from there, and although the House Delegation was all Dem 15 years ago, it's now all GOP. Similar changes in the state legislature. Incidentally, OP, was there a point to this thread, or do you just enjoy finding people to dump on? |
Cite for your erroneous fact? It is a high level of welfare in the state, but to get to 75% you have to include social security, and *any* kind of aid. Also, please look into the history of the coal industry in the state and then examine your superiority. It's hard to imagine a state more exploited by unregulated monopolists. And now that the coal well is running dry, they leave and the people there have nothing. OF course, what do I know, I just grew up there. |
WV girl here. You do not need to be afraid of WV. There are parts of VA and MD that are far more racist than WV. Honestly, you should be much more afraid of many southern states. Are there some backwoods collections of freaks in the mountains? Sure. But that's true all over the place. Go to the Eastern panhandle, the northern panhandle, or near Charleston. It's fine. I didn't see overt racism until I *left* WV and went to Boston. Seriously. |
