OP here. I thought there were so many better places to visit in the world - France, Spain, Greece, Italy, China, Thailand, Japan, etc. Life is drastically different with young children. I hope to pick up better travel once the kids are older.

No kidding, and we did the math, it's almost the same cost to travel to Europe as a week at Disney!!

can you show me your math?

OP here. Our trips have been 4-5 nights but I can do the math for the previous poster who does the full week at Disney.

Flights for a family of 4 - $1200
Disney Tickets - $2000
7 nights at Deluxe Hotel - $4200
Food/Souvenirs - $3000

You could take a trip to Europe for $10k.

I have kids who are 2 and 6. I am pretty sure a European vacation would not be very enjoyable with them. I would expect to hear a lot of whining and complaining that they are bored. They do it when we do some local day trips that involve site seeing. Why would I spend the money to go to Europe to hear them complain when I can just take them to Gettysburg! Disney would make them happy. For us, it's not an every year thing, but it's a fun experience for a kid. You expect them to enjoy every vacation you want to take, why not give them a vacation they may love? Perhaps your 2 and 6 year olds are more cultured than mine and that's okay. I'd like my kids to be kids and Disney works for us! You can teach them the evils of Disney when they are old enough to really understand.

Europe = Gettysburg?

Have you actually been to Europe? LOL.

I have a 3yo and 5yo and I agree with the pp. Although my 5yo may be able to appreciate some culture, my 3yo just can't as much as I want him to. Epcot is about as much culture as he can handle.

We recently went to Puerto Rico and stayed one night in Old San Juan instead of going straight to our beach resort. I thought the kids would enjoy the fort and the old roads. They did not. Kids were complaining it was hot and that the buildings were old. I have been pushing DH for a trip to Europe but I can't even bring it up after our few hours in Old San Juan. I expect many trips to Europe, Asia and S America in the future but for now, we will stick to Disney and stateside vacations.

Yes smarty pants, I have been to Europe. My point was, I'm not dragging my young children all the way to Europe to listen to them whine. I can listen to them whine locally...no need to spend $10,000 to do so. You are either obtuse or just trying to stir the pot.

My guess is that the people who look down on Disney haven't ever been there. We have friends who always said they would never vacation in Florida and especially not Disney. 5 years later after having two children, they went for a week and loved it. My parents live in Florida, so we spend spring break with them each year and visit Disney for a couple of days every couple of years. It's very nicely done and the kids loved it. I don't think you need to do a week there- just 2 or 3 days. For a family vacation, I'd recommend doing a couple of nights at Disney, then drive over to one of the beach towns on the west coast for a few days. We have vacationed as a family all over the world and have seen some incredible areas, but it doesn't make me look down at Disney. My kids are older now, so it's unlikely we will go there again, but I'm glad we did vacation there when they were younger.

Why do people look down at Disney?

Because inferior people have to find SOMETHING to make themselves better.

Also pretty much just annoying. We took the kids for a day. It was enough for all of us.

I look down on ppl who only go to Disney, go year after year, and don't expose their children to any real history or I culture. A man in my office takes his kids out of school every year for a week for Disney. Yet he's never taken them to any of the smithsonian museums right in our backyard. I view that as not valuing education and learning.

Before I had kids, we traveled the world. I admit that I looked down at some co-workers who seemed to only travel to Florida and the Caribbean. Now that I have 2 young kids, we often vacation in Florida and the Caribbean. We have done an Orlando trip every year since my kid was 3yo. It's just so easy to do the 2 hour flight. When my younger child is 5, we plan to start doing trips to Europe and Asia but for now, we will stick to our FL and Caribbean vacations including our annual trip to Orlando.

Why do people look down at Disney?

Hello OP, I've pretty much got the same profile as you. Born in another country, have traveled to over 30 countries (you've got me beat with your 50+ there), have 2 kids, looked down on Disney (but definitely not the Caribbean).
Before kids, DH and I took weekend trips to Europe because it was cheaper than going to the West coast. We've done totally budget vacations and splurge vacations. We took our kids to Asia when they were 1 and 3- we went to Hong Kong Disney- ha! Also took them to Europe when they were 3 and 5 but we decided not to go to Disney Paris that time.

Sure there is a lot of romance in taking small kids to Europe but it falls in the "things that are not really as fun as they look." My kids enjoyed Europe but they pretty much have fun everywhere they go. Did I enjoy Europe with the kids? Well, not as much as going to an all-inclusive resort in the Caribbean. I do understand why people go crazy over Disney and while we have been a couple of times, it's not something I'd want to every year. My kids also are now in upper elementary aren't big Disney fans. We do love going to Orlando to the other non-Disney parks and have done more trips doing that.

I don't look down on Disney. I suppose we would go if we could afford it.... But we have other priorities for our limited funds - mainly involving trips to see family.

We are going to Europe this summer. It is pricing out 2/3 more than Disney/ Orlando. Disney is not as fun for adults, and Europe is not as fun for children. We looked at a bicycle tour that was $1000 a day not including airfare. Not doing that! I guess it depends on where in Europe you are going. Scandinavian countries are notoriously expensive. France and England are very pricey. It depends on whether you want to do budget travel -- but budget is much more fun with young adults/ college kids than it is for mid 30s with young kids. It can be done, but I would not call it "fun" People we know that are doing it and enjoying it are staying with family so avoiding the vey high cost of hotels/ housing.

+1 State dept so have been to many countries. With little kids a nice resort in the Caribbean is hard to beat. And Orlando is a nice get away with many fun things to do with children.

if going to disney every year for a character breakfast but not ever seeing the inside of air and space or archives makes me a bore, then sign me up!

I'm amused by people talking about 'Europe' like it's a monolith.
