Why do people look down at Disney?

Anonymous
What everyone else has said.

And because Disney disgusts me for this reason and others: http://boingboing.net/2010/05/24/what-disney-princess.html

We have visited actual castles and Disney. Our kids liked each for different reasons. Why does it have to be one or another?

Plus, there's no roller coaster at a real medieval castle.

I do.

If you went anywhere else domestically, I wouldn't care, but going Disney is just admitting fealty to our corporate overlords. But maybe I know too many families who identify with Disney to a terrifying degree. I'm sorrynotsorry, no one whose last name is not Disney should have a Disney tattoo.

And no adult should wear Disney ties to work as an attorney.

This.
If you go to a new city or new natural area, you've put thought into it. But for many who go to Disney they go because, 'That's what people do' and I assume they're boring. Or often, I already know they're boring.

OP here. I thought there were so many better places to visit in the world - France, Spain, Greece, Italy, China, Thailand, Japan, etc. Life is drastically different with young children. I hope to pick up better travel once the kids are older.

No kidding, and we did the math, it's almost the same cost to travel to Europe as a week at Disney!!

No one wants to hear about your "fabulous" vacation. Really its backed up by science. Just pretend you are going to Disney like everyone else.

Anything child-centric is boring.

So there's your answer I guess? You seem really insecure OP. Just vacation where you want and stop worrying about what others do. Why is China a "better" place to visit than St. Barth's?

Who cares if people look down on Disney? Take whatever vacation you want, OP. It doesn't matter what other people say or do.

OP here. I'm not insecure about taking my kids to Disney. I have a lot of pride in my travels. Have been to over 50 countries. I was also born in another country. My family immigrated to the US when I was a child.

I love it.

I went once, and am saving to go again (as an adult).

I don't know, I come from a middle class family and Disney wasn't something we could do just every year.

Us as well. We even own a Disney time share! It's fabulous. Whenever we go, we can just relax and have a good time. And we can take our kids to any restaurant --- because Disney loves kids instead of tolerating them.

Maybe if your children were better behaved...

Not PP, but you know good and damned well most nice/niceish restaurants are not pleased about kids as patrons, well behaved or not. Stop it.

And you know that not everyone can afford to go to what you seem to think of as nice/niceish restaurants. Because the nice ones we can afford and take our children to have never been anything but happy to see us. So you stop it.

OP here. Our trips have been 4-5 nights but I can do the math for the previous poster who does the full week at Disney.

Flights for a family of 4 - $1200
Disney Tickets - $2000
7 nights at Deluxe Hotel - $4200
Food/Souvenirs - $3000

You could take a trip to Europe for $10k.
