well, you can't have a photo-op at a school without at least some kids, right?! Seriously, Obama critics will have a field day with this.

The photo op is with the volunteers who are building the playground.

ITS parent here. Sorry that Lee students had to leave early today and parents had to rearrange their schedules.

However, glad to be sharing the school with you (and new playground area). I've seen the playground structure today and it looks great. There were about 75 ITS parents volunteering throughout the day (coming and going), but most volunteers were from Kaboom, military, Americorps, etc.

The only children invited were ones in the oldest class (the first ever ITS class for the ribbon cutting.)

I hope the two schools can work together and support each other.

11:33 here,

Lee parents shouldn't be embarrassed by the attitudes they're exhibiting?

It seems like most posters here are upset either by their schedules being disrupted or that they're missing the opportunity to get to see whatever VIPs are coming. Any concerns about your kids in all this? No legitimate ones, because they're missing one afternoon of school in the beginning of the year and will have access to a playground right outside their door for the next 2 years.

As a parent at a growing charter you'll learn that many things happen last minute and leave you scrambling, that's just new charter life. Also, you'll find yourself in many situations where you'll need to be able to take the long view on things. Wait till you start shopping for your permanent location and have to outfit your own building...

I never meant to sound overlord-y or as if Lee kids are less important than IT kids -- I'm pretty sure none of the IT folks feel that way, myself included. Other than that, I stand my ground on my previous post.

Lee kids are having a half-day, IT kids have to leave aftercare early (which means I am leaving work early), a lot of us are being inconvenienced, you don't get to meet super-special folks and neither do I. Let's move on....

Thanks for the kind message, ITS parent. It does look great. Many Lee parents would have been happy to volunteer but we weren't asked unfortunately. I hope we can work together on other projects in the coming year.

As a new ITS parent I would also like to put it out there that I have received NO information on the event today and NO invitation to attend. My understanding is that it is for the Kaboom playground volunteers. If VIPs are in fact coming today, it is not an ITS event.

Obviously you are bitter and not representative of most IT parents. Please drop it. Your attitude is not pleasant and not helpful.

Do you think that Lee didn't have to outfit the current building? Or work with the construction team? Or deal with it being behind schedule and still far from complete?

You do know that some parents (and thus their kids) lost a day's wages for this. Or missed a day of college class, when college is key to their family's (and their kids') upward mobility. Or had their kids in less than idea childcare situations. For some it is just inconvenience. For others, it Indeed, about the kids. And for a photo-op?! It would be another thing if it was really for construction and so unavoidable. SOMEONE needed to set up and say that no good press comes to the president or a non-profit for shutting a school down to advertise themselves.

ITs families are not being invited I stay after 5. This has nothing to do with iTS kicking anyone out or excluding them. IT parents already met the 75 person requirement. There were many volunteers from Americorps that would have prevented any more volunteers. This is and ITS function down to funding and grant writing. Let's try not to make it an us against then thing. Let's be kind neighbors and support one another. We are sorry for the inconvenice, trust us, we've been there and done that too. Half days for construction, broken windows, etc.

Lee parents, you are obviously new to the charter school experience, and with all due respect, you have a lot to learn. There are all KINDS of inconveniences you will have to deal with as a result of not yet having your own building, and as a result of being a charter school.

In ITS's location for the last 2 years we were next to high school and had to ask them to give up their parking lot to provide us with playspace for our kids. The high school power-washed the space, ITS parent volunteers painted playspaces, ITS/IFA pooled resources to provide big soft playground blocks and other playground equipment, and we shared that space with the high schoolers, whose language and sometimes actions were often not the kind of thing you would want young kids to hear. Our admin and staff also worked over the summer to prepare our previous location/building for our kids, which was not at all configured in any way as a school. Some spaces could not be optimally adapted at all, so we worked with them as best we could.

Yes, you are paying to lease a space, but quite frankly you are LUCKY to be leasing a space that is being adapted so quickly to our kids' needs. You are LUCKY to be leasing a space that has been outfitted as a proper school on another school's dime. You are LUCKY to be starting off in an environment where so many of your needs are already met that you have the time and energy to spend entire threads discussing whether or not your kids should be eating pizza or lentils and quinoa for lunch. You are LUCKY to be inconvenienced by an event that will benefit your kids for the rest of the school year.

If you're not happy as a leasing tenant about the inconvenience of what it takes for another school to build a playground on its home property that your kids will actually get to use, discuss it with your admin. See if you can raise the funds amongst yourselves to move early and/or find a better temporary location for your kids. Good luck with both of those efforts.

In the meantime, despite all your complaining here, welcome to our building. We're happy to have your kids as our neighbors. Not sure how we feel about the parents yet ...

-This is so upsetting. I can't believe that a parent not only is so rude, but so hateful. All charters are lucky to be in any space. I did not know that someone who IS a parent could be so negative. It's parents like you that give charters bad names. If IT didn't want a sub- they didn't have to have one. If you are speaking on behalf of IT, I couldn't be happier my child isn't attending that school. Holy cow. You may be in need of medication. I know who isn't "LUCKY"...ppl that have to be around you lady!!!!!

Well, I don't think the post was that harsh. I do think IT parents should be more understanding about Lee frustrations at getting booted out of school for no good reason. Someone didn't think this through - can you imagine the field day national fox news will have if they can make a story about Obama shutting down a school for a photo-op. I would have gleefully eaten up a Bush story with this easy, catchy moral (style over substance).
