I'm not concerned about Wal-Mart nation. I'm concerned about solid schools that will get my kids into good graduate or professional programs. |
| FCPS students can always get in to a higher-ranked college out-of-state UVA/William&Mary = competitive for Ivy's, JMU/VT = competitive other elites. Even on the other end, Nova CC = competitive for most other state U's. There may be financial reasons to send your FCPS to a Va college, and some choices may be the best fit. Too often, however, the FCPS student w/multiple APs but middle-of-the-pack GPA ends up at a less-than-stellar instate school far below their ability. They are resentful, as they should be. |
| University of Wisconsin is a great school for a normal A student. |
|
If "Brand Name" means name recognition by the "average" American," just look at the college football rankings. Most of those schools have big time brand recognition and many aren't too difficult to get into.
If "brand recognition" means name recognition by a future employer, it really depends on what profession and what geographic location you are planning on. In this area, Maryland, Delaware, Penn State and Virginia Tech all have good brand recognition and strong alumni networks. |
| Maryland hasn't been "easy to get into" for some time, regardless of how crappy it's football team is, |
| DD has a friend accepted at Princeton (et. al.) but who will be enrolling at UVA. Parents and student are both excited. It's not always about the brass ring. |
I knew a high school senior who turned down Brown for U.Va last year after attending a program for admitted students and finding that he just didn't click with the other students admitted to Brown. But turning down Princeton for U.Va. strikes me as odd. Hopefully the parents will save some money on tuition. |
PP, the University of Chicago is spectacular on a million different levels. But it's always been disproportionally easy to get in. That may be because it's known to be a "harder" school, and also because it's on a trimester system, so effectively there's a great deal more work than there is at comparably-ranked major research universities. If you add the course-count for Chicago's Common Core courses to required basic foreign language proficiency and the courses required for a declared major, something like 2/3 of the courses are required, so there's little opportunity to mess around looking for easy electives. So Chicago exhibits a greater element of self-selection among applicants than HYP, for example. That said, the acceptance % has dropped every year for the past several. Is Chicago "easy" to get in to? No, never. But it's a bit easier than a few comparables. |
Actually, the acceptance rate at Chicago this year was about 9 %, so it's easier to get into than Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT and Stanford. |
Maryland's admit rate is 44% which is a bit lower than its peer schools in the USNWS rankings Syracuse (49%) Pitt (58%) UCONN (47%) and Georgia (63%) Penn State is ranked considerably higher, but has a 52% admit rate. None of these schools are "easy" to get into, but they haven't hit the selective level. Decide for yourself which "brand" is best. |
|
Acceptance rate is not an especially meaningful indication of selectivity because it tells you more about how many applied than what it took to get in. The DOE publishes information as to the average SAT and ACT component scores of admitted students. You can search by lowest 25% or highest 25%. If you are looking for the “easiest” school to get into, you’d look at lowest 25% - which points to the lowest score that gives you a chance to get in.
http://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/datacenter/mastervariablelist.aspx?stepId=2 The website is not user friendly when it comes to comparing a broad range of schools, but play around enough and you’ll notice that HYP are NOT the most difficult schools to get into – schools like Cal Tech, Washington University and Harvey Mudd require higher scores. It would be nice to see an overall SAT ranking – the site linked does it by each STA component. |
|
The website does allow you to sort by bottom 25% composite ACT score, which tells you which schools are the most difficult to squeeze into. Here is the top part of that list: (apologies if the format is messed up)
