Yeah, well real preps don't live off Martha's Vineyard they live off Nantucket, maybe the Cape (Cod) and coastal Maine. The Vineyard is for the New Yorkers and people from this area. And real preps, not the posers, wear LL Bean.

They are not flashy. It's an understated New England thing.

They are not chain shoppers.

Women are fresh scrubbed, not heavily made up. Hair is simple.

Quality over quantity. Things are bought to last. This goes with cars as well as clothes.

Worn in vs new.

Yes. This is also my understanding.

And my old money-friend of the Kennedy's--choate/harvard grad friend has a big rock....simple, but likely cost a small fortune. She wears skinny jeans and expensive yet simple tees and sweaters with expensive flats....

A true preppy would call this kind of conspicuous display tacky not preppy.

Well, you are wrong. There is an island off of MV called Naushon http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naushon_Island privately owned by the Forbes Family (not Malcolm, but rather John Forbes Kerry). They have impeccable prep credentials. Trust me.

WASP and prep are ABSOLUTELY not the same thing!

Funny how anyone in D.C. can claim to know what preppy is. It just doesn't happen here. But it is funny when it "tries".

It's great to know DCUM attracts so many folks stuck in 1978. Seriously, who the fuck cares what is "preppy" in 2013?

This thread is insane. None of you are Kennedy descendents and that is not at all what is chic anymorem, anyway. Probably the most preppy-esque celebrity out there is Gwyenth Paltrow and hello, she is half Jewish. Get over yourselves and your antiquated notions of class warfare. The fact that you have to spell out so painstakingly what we should all be aspiring to goes to show -- its become so marginalized nobody recognizes it or gives a crap. people used to admire our prep school culture because hello, those were the people with money. Not so anymore. And American preps have never ever had anything on British preps because no matter how hard they try, they are always and forever going to be relatively new money. So shut up already. There is no longer special clubs or dances for you, others no longer long for prep-dom, and you will not be special ex-pats. It is over. Get over it.

And khakis with navy blazers with brass buttons is STILL the universal preppy dress code....and that's what you will see at HR this Sunday.

That's the funny thing about preppy. It stays exactly the same. My 5 and 7 year olds are wearing blazers, polos (not as in Ralph Lauren), Oxford shirts, etc passed down from older cousins. The style for boys is exactly the same as it was 50+ years ago.

The people dressing to look preppy aren't natural preps. The look is effortless and not new.

Yes, I see that. Mom and DD=same. Dad and DS=same. But real preps wear expensive clothes for a long time. They treasure their Moms hunting jacket, old handbag etc.

It just sounds so silly and sort of fake that it would be determined by clothing choices or certain very specific look. Are you really looking to associate yourself with people, who appear to be upper class, OP? Are you upper class yourself?

It is a look I have seen every where in the world.

Move to coastal CT, MA, Maine, RI.

That's like saying "real" rich people don't live here. Real Choate grads don't live. Real Harvard grads don't live here. (Actually, they do. All three. I know.) Do you realize how stupid you sound?

I also love everyone "assuring" everyone else of what "real" "preps" do or don't do. It's like this mythical unicorn everyone's trying to paint. I'm wondering if anyone that comments on this crap actually knows any wealthy people. You all sure seem so insecure in your assurances.
