Do you turn off your exterior lights? Neighbors giving us grief about ours.

Tell him to lump it.

Where do you people live that you feel the need to light up your property like a prison yard all night or, alternatively, have motion sensor activated lights flicking on and off all night at every passing chipmunk? Do you have bars on your windows and pit bulls in the yard too?

Has anyone suggested motion sensor light?

I don't really see the point of leaving them on all night, and i really don't want to have to buy blackout shades for one month of the year. (I like leaving the blinds open on that one window to get light in the morning to help me wake up.) I like my neighbors a lot, but the worst they could say is no, right? It's just an awkward question to ask and makes me feel a little scrooge-y for asking.

Ours are admittedly bright, but we use a dusk + # of hours timer, so they tend to be off by around 10:15 or so.

Agree it's an awkward request.

Timers are cheap.
Maybe offer a "spare" one you happen to have for them to use?

There is absolutely no reason your light should cross over into your neighbor's yard. Do your dogs also hop the fence?

Move it lower and/or reposition it. If that doesn't work, turn it off and give your wife a flashlight.

Whatever Mr. Wilson. Go back to sharpening your popping tool for neighborhood kids' errant kickballs.

Our neighborhood had a couple of car break- ins recently and we have decided to to turn on our front and backdoor lights at night. Our neighbors take issue to it because they say it bothers their sleep. They suggest we change to motion sensing, but DH thinks motion sensing is not reliable. FWIW, our lights are frosted 60w fixtures, and not the bright flood lights.

WWYD.

I would let my neighbor know that they will sleep a lot less securely when someone comes into their home vs your light. I have front light on all night and back yard is on motion detector that works really well because the feral cats set it off all the time. I live in the city.

no don't keep your light on at night why piss off your neighbors

We all keep our front lights on. We also have some street lights that requires that we use good quality blinds to darken our rooms.

I have side lights and back light that has a motion sensor on it. It will light up even if a small animal crosses the yard (mainly fox or deer).

Your need for security is based on your desire to safeguard your person and property. What do they do when it is a full moon night?

Your neighbors need to buy better blinds. Tell them that you have made as many changes as you could and now they need to get blinds.

Few months roll by and he approaches me again, this time complaining the light is lighting up his patio and yard. It won't end, this time it appears he just won't be satisfied. So I nailed a board to the tree next to the light in a way to block it from him. Again I received many thanks. He went on to complain that mist people attach the lights to the house and not on the back if the garage. It was the easiest and must concur by place to have it.

Well, now the tree needs to be cut down, recent snow cut 1/2 of it down and is hanging. There goes the shield come the removal of the tree. Is there any law that can protect me from how I have my security light.

10 min motion sensor light, used for the wife to monitor the dogs while I'm away from home.

It sounds like your light is a lot brighter than necessary. I really wouldn't like to have a neighbors light shining onto my porch or into my yard. Tone down the bulb and position the light into your own yard.

I'm so glad I have a good sized yard. I really wouldn't like to have neighbors spotlights shining on my house at night.

Online advice about home security says DO use motion sensitive lights:

•Use infra-red motion sensor lights on the rear of single family homes

I'm here because our new neighbors' lights shine right into our windows and it is bothering us. We live out of town and the lights on our garage are on a motion sensor so that they can scare off wild animals or stupid people. I tried to ask them nicely to put some sort of shade so that it shone only onto their property, or a motion sensor so it wasn't all night long and they've done nothing. We live out of town... one of the nicest things about being out here is the lack of light pollution, the stars are incredible if you aren't blinded by a spot light. NOW, they've moved the house (they are building a new one) and they've left this light on even though I don't think it could be benefiting them at all. Yes I have blinds, that does nothing for the light pollution when I would like to star gaze but whatever. I am simply upset because I asked nicely, and they haven't even bothered to answer with any reason they believe that thing needs to be on all night with no shade/aim or motion detector.

One may need to light ones property, but please aim it at ones own property... lol we are so not urban, guess this is the wrong place. But try to be considerate... aim your light away if it bothers your neighbor or put in on a motion sensor.

A good BB gun can take care of a light that shines directly into the house. Illuminating the yard is one thing, but direct light is rude.

I think it is incredibly rude to pollute a neighbor's sleeping space with artificial light at night.

PP here. Agree with all of this. Also, there is a body of evidence linking light at night to increased risk of cancer.

+1 on this. I can't believe there are 8 pages of people supporting your right to be a dick by leaving your light on all night. Where do you all live that this is the norm?? If you're the one with the light on, you are the one CAUSING the nuisance. Why should your neighbors have to compensate with a blackout blind that will interfere in their natural sleep patterns?? This is such common sense.

A couple years ago, my toddler switched our back side light on, and i didn't realize it for days. I was mortified when I finally noticed -- my poor neighbors must have been so annoyed.

I believe OP had stated there was a problem with crime. I don't have stats on what light will do to alleviate that, but it seems that it would be a deterrent.
