If someone is a size 12, do you think they are fat?

Anonymous
When I was a size 12, I felt overweight. Now at a size 14, I am definitely overweight! Ideal for my 5'8'' frame - and I am "big-boned" and wide-hipped - is a size 8 to 10. So to answer your question, yes, I believe a size 12 is fat, though not horribly so.

There is really no excuse as to how I managed to get so fat and out of shape, other than too much eating and too little moving. I think it is a horrible example to your children to allow yourself to get so out of shape, especially if you do not naturally have a big build and never struggled with weight until kids came along. I feel for people born heavy, or people who's parents fed them junk as a child they really have an uphill battle.

As a former fat girl, I really hate all the excuses people make about fat. You don't do the fat person a favor by making excuses.

How did you lose it?

I lost 50 lbs 4 years ago and the answer to your question is more exercise and less food. People always ask me that question and seem disappointed with the answer. I've never known anyone who kept it off with a fad diet.

You are exactly correct! People ask how I did it, as if there is a secret that I'm onto and are a bit saddened to hear that I did not lose it on Atkins, South Beach, Master Cleanse, or some other gimmick.

I say the only thing I find exceptional about it, is that I do manage to fit in daily (7 days of exercise) into my life a a Full Time working mom of two small children 5 and under. I keep one goal in mind and nothing will get in my way.

Do you enjoy life? Do you have time for family and friends? Any hobbies besides exercise?

I would consider myself highly social. However, my social activities often revolve around friends who are also into being fit. I would say that I spend 2 evenings a month out with girlfriends and then have a group of friends who I very often go hiking, sign up for races with, cycle with, or (like tonight) attend a class at the gym with. When I say I exercise 7 days a week, not every day is at the gym. I often bike to and from work, which unfortunately has just stopped since the clocks changed, but simply commuting on my bike 2-3xa a week means 60-90 miles right there. However 7 day a week means each and every day I break a sweat for at least 30min.

Hobbies? Like what? Woodworking, knitting, scrapbooking? No. Does reading count? I play the piano and I read 2 or so books a month….

I know some people don’t quite understand how exercise could be fun. I understand that riding a bike out to Purcellville with your kids on the back having lunch and turning around might not be considered “having a life”, or that going on a hike with the little one on a hiking pack on my back, but I find there are not only physical rewards to getting fresh air, but it also feeds the soul. Also, incorporating my children into these weekend activities is fun for them and teaches them that being active is a normal everyday adult behavior.

You get mommy of the year!!! Incorporating your children into your workout obsession.

I know, right? Taking your kids out on a bike ride is really just nuts! OCD for sure! I just feel so sorry for kids who have parents who do outdoor activities with them, they probaly don't get to watch hours of TV ont he weeknds like normal kids

Agree. There is too wide (no pun intended) a range of how people would wear a size 12. This is a ridiculous and shallow question.

I don't think it was an intentionally shallow question, I think the OP was curious and people have given a lot of interesting input about the shapes of their bodies and what sizes they wear.

I wore a size 12 when I was super fit, doing aerobics/kickboxing/weight lifting most days of the week. I am tall and had an awesome hourglass figure and a flat belly. So, no, for me, size 12 did not = fat. I am trying to get back there post-baby.

For those of you who say size 12 is not fat- what weight were you and what height? maybe a body fat calculator would be a better guide as to whether someone is fat or not.

I don't understand these comments at all.
At 133 and 5'8", I wore a size 10 wedding gown. How could a person think a 10 or 12 is worn by a fat person?
Also, with "vanity sizing", people are kidding themselves. They proudly say "I wear a size 4." when it really is a larger size.

I'm 145 and 5'3" and wear a 10. I'm definitely fat.

Other daughter at 5'8" is 135 and a size 4. Have no idea where she carries it. She looks very long and lean. Size means nothing. Thank god I have always told my daughters that . You who think it is about a size are nuts. We all look great in clothes and know what works on us. I think my daughter who is 5'5" is the happiest with her body. Think Sophia Vergara.

I'm 5'8" and 135 and a size 2/4. So funny how differently sized the same height/weight can be.

I was just thinking the same thing. I'm 5'8" and 138 lbs, also athletic body type with small breasts. I wear size 6 (size 4 in Ann Taylor/LOFT, esp. trousers).

I have been up to 20 lbs. heavier. I was technically still at a healthy BMI (and actually exercised more than I do now), but I wore a size 10 and felt fat. So, wearing a size 12 would have been overweight for me.

Unless things have changed since I got married (about a dozen years ago), I don't think wedding gown sizing is the same as off-the-rack clothing sizing.

Depends on height, but in general I'd say a size 12 is at least a little chubby...

It's funny about size inflation...I recently found a container with some of my old HS clothes it. And the cut was so baggy back then (late 80s) that I could still wear many of the items. Even though they were size 2/4 (I'm more like 10/12 now).

Go away, mean girl. I refuse to let you make me feel bad about my size 12 body. It not only gave me a child but also got me from the start line to the finish line of the Marine Corps Marathon this year at the age of 40. I'm going to give it the respect it deserves by celebrating the victories and ignoring the criticism. Strong women come in all shapes and sizes.
