If someone is a size 12, do you think they are fat?

Nope.

For myself at 12, I could lose a few pounds but don't consider myself fat. My ideal size is 8.

I think clothes are cut a little differently than they used to be also. BUT mostly, I think your friend is an ass with issues about her own body.

I would really like to know how that's even possible. I weigh 125, I'm 5'1" and I wear a size0, 2 or at absolute most a size 4. No matter the designer--even clothing that runs lean. I was a size 10 when I was pregnant and weighed 150-160!!!

5'9" here former 12, now 4 after a lot of hard work. I lost 40lbs to get here. I was very overweight and would say I was fat. It really was pretty gross. There is really no excuse as to how I managed to get so fat and out of shape, other than too much eating and too little moving. I think it is a horrible example to your children to allow yourself to get so out of shape, especially if you do not naturally have a big build and never struggled with weight until kids came along. I feel for people born heavy, or people who's parents fed them junk as a child they really have an uphill battle.

As a former fat girl, I really hate all the excuses people make about fat. You don't do the fat person a favor by making excuses.

It wouldn't mean too much weight gain or just different sizing that come with different brands and I could easily be a 12 without looking fat. Oh, and I'm a 6 on top - I know, serious pear shape! For dresses I usually wear a 6 or 8 depending on the cut. The number just doesn't mean much.

PP, and I'm the opposite. I am a 12 in many tops, but my pants are 8-10 - a serious inverted triangle. I'm 5'9"", 145, and am considered on the slim side.

12 is big, unless you are over 5'10" or 6 feet, IMO.

But you also don't do them any favors by ridiculing them or saying that they're gross, n'est ce pas?

Yeah, I don't see how 123 lbs could fill out size 12 pants. But if I ever get back to 123lbs (my dream weight), I'll be sure to let you know!

I ate less and moved more. I eat only protein in the morning and hardly any white carbs throughout the day. Due to all my exercise, I would guess I'm eating about 2100cal/day to maintain. It took about 9 months for my metabolism to really start to kick in and crank up. Once I got most of the egregious excess weight off and had a lot of strength training under my belt, I started to run. The running has shaped me into my dream...a nice slim build.

I just hear a lot of people overweight who have more excuses and I was one of them until I was truly digusted by what was in the mirror and how out of shape and tired I was feeling.

As to the PP, I'm not calling fat people gross. I was speaking of myself. I find it very hard to believe that there are many women out there happy with themselves as a 12. Today's 12 is yesterday's 16 and whichever you slice and dice it, a woman in her 30s and 40s should not be that size. Your 30s and 40s should be prime time for looking and feeling your best ever.

I'm 5'10 and for my build, a size 12 means probably 20 lbs to lose. At a size 10 I have probably 10-15 lbs to lose to be at my target weight. I think it depends on the build. There are a few people that are athletic/ muscular or large boned that you can't picture being a size 8 that the 10 or 12-14 looks good on them. I think the pp that mentioned weight gain with kids etc. was right. If you weren't that size 12 or even 10 pre-kids and you were eating right and working out then, you probably don't fall into the category of having that build, like how Marilyn Monroe looked great but wasn't a stick figure.

How did you lose it?

I lost 50 lbs 4 years ago and the answer to your question is more exercise and less food. People always ask me that question and seem disappointed with the answer. I've never known anyone who kept it off with a fad diet.

Yes, correct. As someone who works out...if you are a healthy weight and just have a muscular build then people are going to see defined muscles on you. I see large girls who think they are "muscular" and they might be if they did not have that layer of fat surrounding the muscle. It is yet another excuse for carrying too much excess weight.

If you are 30-40 years old and carrying an extra 20, 30, 40, putting you in the 12/14 clothes, you are really going to be staring down obesity at 50/60 and a host of health issues. Fat does not happen overnight, it takes years and then you've arrived a place so hard to get out of, only those with the strongest of determination can beat.

You are exactly correct! People ask how I did it, as if there is a secret that I'm onto and are a bit saddened to hear that I did not lose it on Atkins, South Beach, Master Cleanse, or some other gimmick.

I say the only thing I find exceptional about it, is that I do manage to fit in daily (7 days of exercise) into my life a a Full Time working mom of two small children 5 and under. I keep one goal in mind and nothing will get in my way.

There might be some exceptions, but I would say that generally people who are a size 12 are fat.

I'm fat at a size 6 and could stand to loose 30lbs.

People! It's 'lose' not 'loose,' come on now.

Thanks.
