If someone is a size 12, do you think they are fat?

I'm not talking about weight at all, as it is subjective. But do you think women who are a size 12 are fat and need to loose weight? My friend thinks yes, she says anyone over a 10 is not healthy, especially with today's sizing. I kind of agree, as when I was a 12, I was 30 lbs o er my all time high weight. But my sis is a 12, and I don't think of her as fat, although she could certainly lose weight.

What is your opinion?

I think a person who is 6 feet tall and a size 12 has a different body composition than someone who is a size 12 and 5 feet tall. Clothing size is not a good way to gauge fitness.

"Fat" is subjective. Generally, women who wear a size 12 need to lose weight. This may be a normal size now, but that is only because the obesity epidemic has skewed our perception. Note that I am only talking about today's size 12; sizes have grown dramatically over the years. Thus, a person who wears a size 12 in clothing from 20 or 30 years ago may not need to lose weight.

No. I wear size 12 pants. I weigh 123 lbs. I have gained 10 lbs with 2 kids. My body has changed proportions. Pre-kids I wore a size 6. I'm in the process of losing 10 lbs (lost 6 already). I can maybe squeeze into a 10, but it's tight. So, no I do not think I'm fat. I think clothes are cut a little differently than they used to be also. BUT mostly, I think your friend is an ass with issues about her own body.

I'm a Size 12, and I do think I'm fat. My BMI comes
out as overweight and I definitely need to lose at least 10, better yet 20, pounds.
Still working on that......

No, I don't think they're fat. Then again, I don't pay attention to other people's weight unless they're having mobility issues.

This.

I'd also add that even weight per se is not a true gauge of fitness, it's the muscle/fat ratio.

You cannot judge by size, imo. There is a range of difference for sizes depending on the designer, height comes into play, bone structure in addition to fat, general body shape (curves, etc.)

Few women are a size 12 due to muscle unless they are body builders. I would consider a size 12 chubby but not fat. Probably someone who could lose 10-30 lbs depending on height

"Fat" is relative. I'm a size 18 and would love to be a size 12. That would be thin for me. The last time I was a size 12 was in 1988. I'm 41.

This is me. I am 5'9" and defintely need to lose 25-30 lbs. But I have never really been below a size 10, even when I was 40 lbs lighter. Of course that was before size deflation.

I do not consider size 12 "fat", although the people I know that size need to lose weight.

I am very fat at a size 12. I am not sure I've ever been a size 12. I'm definitely fat at a size 8.

There might be some exceptions, but I would say that generally people who are a size 12 are fat.

Not necessarily.
