If you want to get all semi-scientific about neighborhood types, see if you recognize yourself by zip code:

Good lord! That is like a magic ball...

'Money&Brains' and 'Young Digerati' so aptly describe my hood within 22201 :

...and it produced almost identical results as former zipcode '20007'...

That sounds more like McLean/North Arlington. But it's not due to nanny, it's because of the postings or the schools, and a little help from nanny/au pair/mom/dad.

What's this one!?! Frankly-- and please don't flame me -- it sounds little like us (although not so sure how "big" the jobs are). And we dont have a nanny but have done the abroad thing and thus kids are bilingual. Please tell!

I live on a side street of Rockwood Pky (Spring Valley), went to a top 10 liberal arts college, drive a 10 yr old Mercedes station wagon, don't shop new money designer stores (it looks tacky when people can see your label), and even though I have a nanny I stay at home and raise my kids. I've never been to OBX, we tend to summer further up north and I'm pretty much par for the course in my social circle.

These families with leased Range Rovers and no money in the bank at the end of the month or no trust funds for their kids and thus will have to apply for financial aid or send them to a large state school are comical.

then what does the nanny do?

if you have to ask...

I'll do it. North Arlington moms have masters degrees, wear quilted jackets and fleece vests, don't wear makeup--more of the "freshly scrubbed" look like they just got back from a hike, drive Subarus, stay home with the kids at least part-time until they return to their non-profit jobs when the kids are older, kids aren't allowed to watch TV--there may not even be a TV in the house. I'm not one of them, but I know many and they're really nice people.

Does a down winter coat count as a quilted jacket?
Also, I own a fleece vest but only wear it when camping

I am an Arlington mom and I would agree with this pretty much. I rarely wear makeup, drive a 2001 Saab, and have a quilted vest! But I definitely let my kids watch tv and I work full time. This description does fit a lot of the other moms I know in Arlington. Arlington is surprisingly low-key for the amount of wealth that many people have. I would also add many of us wear Dansko clogs!

I love my Danskos. I don't care what the Potomac moms think. I have a PhD and I have a full-time job. No quilted jacket; though, I might be tempted.

So far I have learned from that link that I either have too many kids and am too young to live in my neighborhood, or I have the correct number of kids but am not supposed to own my house and am too old to live in my neighborhood, and that in either case I make too much money to live in my neighborhood. I shop at many of the stores listed for almost every group in my neighborhood, but would not be caught dead in others. So much for market data. The people who rely on this stuff are going to have to work harder if they want to figure me out.

what kind of moms live in Arlington?

We've already been over this. Read a couple of posts up.

I posted the North Arlington mom stereotype and I can't believe I forgot the Danskos! Of course!

low-key, down-to-earth, educated, non-ostentatious- esp considering the wealth. ppl are very modest. see previous posts for more elaboration.

Today's Intriguing Question:

Genetic researchers are starting to determine that IQ is more closely related genetically to the female than to the male. What does that mean for all these (book) smart and sucessful men who marry the typical trophy wifes who has a very little brain? Will Ivy league educated Dads still want to mate and co-produce with a community college educated mom when she is more likely to pass on the brain matter? Does this explain those families we all know with an uber-smart dad, not so much mom, and the dumb-as-a-post off-spring? Food for thought that goes right along with all these sterotype postings that claim many financially sucessful and well-educated men in Washington are married to brainless, hair-straightening, nail-painting, world-oblivious women.

Doubtful. If they didn't have a problem marrying trophy wives when the assumption was that IQ was a 50/50 split, it is doubtful that they will change if the numbers shift toward the mothers.

That aside, the effect can't be all that big. If IQ was really inherited from moms, this would be plainly obvious to parents, just from looking at friends and family. Since it is not, the effect can't be all that strong.

Hmm, interesting. I used to live in NoArlington..."Bohemian Mix or Young Digerati", but had to move due to my disdain for quilted anything and my propensity to wear make up, apparently. So off to 22101.."Upper Crust or Blue Blood Estates (?!?!)" I go....
