Last Day of School Possibly Changing to June 12th?

Yup the parents of the elementary kids want that day off free from the kids. Why does the board listen to this mess?

I would bet fewer parents have Veterans Day off now than they did when kids went to school on Veterans Day. Not everyone is a fed.

It isn’t a guaranteed holiday, I never had it off in the private sector. But almost all federal employees and contractors do have it off.

Upper ES teacher. Your kid will be missing content if they stay home in June. We have paced out the rest of the year and kids will have new content through June with exception of last three days.

ES teacher here - all new content will be done by the end of April. May/June are SOLs, review and movies.

They are voting Thursday and school board seems to support this change.

So glad. My kids will be thrilled with the longer summer and getting out earlier.

It was basically a waste of a day then.

Literally just one day earlier? You sound insane.

I feel it would be nice to have the last 3 days at end of school year as optional, I mean some parents have to work so the kids can go to school, but there’s usually very little to no teaching at school during that time. On the other hand, if kids have to go to camp anyways, it’s usually 5 day camp. Moreover, it’s nice to have end of quarter right before spring break like this year, so most teachers didn’t give assignment & sol practice like they did last year.

Not true at our ES... Greenbriar West. They still have lots to do in May/June.

I call troll here. Benchmark Unit 8 will be finished in June as well as SS/Science. We paced it out and we have everything finishing second week of June. Each Benchmark unit is 15 days if you use no FLEX days. We have no flex days for U7/U8 to just get through the curriculum. So I dunno where you teach that all new content will be done in a few weeks? Literally each quarter has a science unit and SS units.

6th grade teacher here.

A assembly takes 45 mins to 1 hour. The rest of the day was normal.

They are voting whether to make Veteran's Day and Columbus Day regular school days. They are not voting to end school earlier.

And that is a smaller portion of the population in this area than people on DCUM like to think. Also I've always worked for government contractors and rarely has Veteran's Day been a holiday. For my current employer, it is a floating holiday. I'd rather take the day after Thanksgiving off than use it on actual veteran's day.
