Last Day of School Possibly Changing to June 12th?

Anonymous
From Melanie Meren's FB page, there is a good discussion about her upcoming motion on April 10th to limit ERs to four times a year and nd designate Veterans Day and Indigenous Peoples’ Day as instructional days. These changes would provide at least two additional full school weeks for families this fall. Progress!

There is a sub-discussion going on underneath. Loudoun just moved their last day of school up to Friday, June 12th to prioritize a cleaner ending to the school year and add 5 days (including the weekend) to summer. Lots of support in this discussion, especially given we began school on the same date.

Melanie Meren has expressed support for this on her facebook page and said that she would raise it. If you are in support, please contact your school board member.

This would be great!

Best idea ever! Yes to a longer summer!

With all the days off and delays, could we still get to the minimum number of hours if we cut 3 days from the calendar?

I don't get it. People have been complaining about all the random holidays, weather delays and closures, early releases, and the answer is to shorten the calendar?

Not elementary school, I don’t think. The meeting occurs on April 10, so they can’t remove the TW or SP that occur that week. There’s only one TW day left (May 26) and 2 holidays (Memorial Day and Eid.) Nobody is coming in on Memorial Day.

Nobody is changing this year's calendar and likely also not next year's calendar, which has already been released. You can lobby for this to occur in future years, but nobody is changing calendars that already exist.

In addition, Kyle McDaniel has already sent out an email that he will not support changing the calendar until 27-28.

I don't think this would go over well for the current school board members. Elementary parents seem the most angry about the current calendar -- likely because of the 3 hr early releases. Changing the last day of school this late would mess up so many summer camp plans, which largely affects elementary students. I'd bet there are a ton of parents using leave or work hour flexibility to cover the 2 days on the last week of school, especially anyone who has Juneteenth off. If they suddenly make the whole week off, those parents will be in a bad situation and rightly angry. This area requires you to have summer care plans figured out by January. Changing it now will do nothing to help parents. Also, lower elementary students, who seem most hurt by the current Swiss cheese calendar do actually keep working into June because they don't have SOL.

It worked for Loudoun because my understanding is they already planned to have Mon June 15th as the last day. That's incredibly stupid to have a Mon as the last day of school, and I would bet anyone taking trips already just planned to skip and anyone needing camp either secured it for Tue-Fri or planned to skip for full week of camp.

Ugh, I’d rather have an extra week off during the year. The summer bus already too long.

I’m all for it next year. But I have 2 kids in elementary and I already have the summer camp plans sorted. I don’t wanna have to figure out what to do with an extra few more days.

The year goes absurdly late this June.

Yes, please chop those days

Absolutely not. We don’t want school on Columbus Day or Veterans Day.

The end of the school year isn’t changing for FCPS. Finals are already set.

I don’t think it will change. We literally just planned out our end of year in ES which is a lot. We have our moving up ceremony and party that last week and all the other events are scheduled. It would be chaotic for a last minute change. Most people planned camps/summer travel on this calendar. They should make changes but not to this year.
